It was fantastic. Mary thinks that the cocaine song is a Dan song,

Also, Steely Dan is not crap, with a bunch waffles because they have a lot of duds.

I should not like them -- they have nothing in common with most music that I enjoy -- but inexplicably I do.

Part of it is definitely nostalgia from hearing it on the radio as a kid in the 70s, it sounded a lot cooler than, say, Dan Fogelberg or Bread or whatever (my parents were squares).

And I think Fagen has a cool voice ... and the Skunk/Dias guitars were interesting at times, the solo on Do it Again's pretty fuckin odd for FM radio.

Man, I really enjoy this. She cops the perfect attitude for the vocal. It's like, well, a young woman doing a Donald Fagen impression. Music at 1:05.

R.I.P. Walter.

For some reason, every single bass player I've ever worked with seems to think they're the absolute bees' knees.

I voted Not Crap, but then I don't really like anything I've heard from "Aja" onwards, so that'd have to be a :WF: of at least six.

Generally speaking, if I want a more recent combination of glossy melodies and cryptic, sardonic lyrics I fix me some Microdisney.

Not crap. I was always ok with the classic rock tunes I heard time and again. Just a few years ago, I learned that the name of that 'smile for a camera' song was called "Peg". I never really listened to any of their studio albums, except for one of the discs from that box set they put out years ago. I think I liked the lyrics more than I liked the tunes.
- "Whatever happened to that album?"
- "I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall, and it like, shattered."

I used to really dislike this band. I thought they were the tamest, most boring band in the world. Then I really seriously listened to their lyrics, and it all clicked. I still don't LOVE them, but I respect their subtlety a lot. RIP: Walter Becker.

Heard "Do It Again" in a bar the other day and found myself getting into it.

Great. So now I like a Steely Dan song. Fuck me.

I largely prefer the deep cuts. Pretzel Logic and The Royal Scam are where it's at for me. I don't hear prog in them at all, btw.

A few picks:

Charlie Freak
Black Friday
Monkey in your Soul
Pretzel Logic
Don't Take Me Alive
Through With Buzz
Sign in Stranger
Third World Man
Home at Last
Pretzel Logic

Late reply here, but my dad asked for a Steely Dan CD for christmas again as he as done for the past 3 years, and being a good son I oblige dutifully. This year Amazon is sending digitial downloads to people who purchase other music media and they sent me Aja, which I just listened to in its entirety hoping to find some gems in the deep cuts.

This record is bad. It's the epitome of white dad jazz, just oozing with coke-drenched smarm. Every single note of it is revolting to me. I threw my ipod across the room and I swear a little puff of coke dust blew out of the headphones.

There is a Steely Dan song that has this fucked up rhythm. In the chorus it sounds normal at first but in the last bar an extra beat is added before it goes back to the beginning. It sounds like they spliced two takes together and accidentally left in an extra beat, except it's consistent. Anyone know what song I am talking about?

I was working in a bar where it was played every now and then and it used to annoy the piss out of me.

Steely Dan is awful.

Serious question: Do you actively avoid listening to music with parts in odd meters?

It's not just an odd meter. But I can't explain any better, you have to hear it.

Regarding Steely Dan's 1977 masterpiece Aja, jimmy two hands wrote:It's the epitome of white dad jazz, just oozing with coke-drenched smarm. Every single note of it is revolting to me. I threw my ipod across the room and I swear a little puff of coke dust blew out of the headphones.

Hell yeah.

May have been mentioned earlier in the thread, but I do not think there is any middle ground when it comes to The Dan.

I found this killer bootleg at the Spitalfields Record Fair and I'm pretty sure the guy I bought it from was responsible for the manufacturing as well:

I feel like you mean a passage that is in an odd meter, but only by way of shoddy editing. Those dudes were obsessive about every last production detail, though, right?

Can anyone figure out the tune in question?
