TV Show: Better Call Saul

Postby Dave//Eksvplot on Tue Jan 28, 2014 5:52 pm

Upcoming spin-off of Breaking Bad starring Bob Odenkirk as the funny, quick-witted criminal lawyer Saul Goodman. In this article Odenkirk says that it will not effectively be "Breaking Bad 2.0" but rather a different sort of show featuring some of the same characters and a vibe all its own. Have read that it will take place before the events of Breaking Bad but also might feature Saul's life after the fact.

What do you think? Is this gonna rule, or not?

I've enjoyed Odenkirk's antics since the Ben Stiller Show days so the idea of him playing the lead on his own show sounds pretty entertaining.

Better Call Saul is set to premiere toward the end of 2014.

Probably gonna be funny, but i dunno, just the idea of Breaking Bad having a spin off seems cheesy. Spin offs are generally cheesy, and Breaking Bad seems the last show that would need one. I will watch though.

A good friend of mine is on the writing staff for this show.

FWIW, he's funny as hell.

Figured it was fair game since I've seen plenty of Crap/Not Crap threads about movies and shows that weren't ready to be watched at first.

Better Call Saul already has a Facebook page, and its own website (http://www.bettercallsaul.com/), so I figured we might as well start a thread about it.

Now that there's a show underway and they're making official announcements about it, the website is even more relevant. I suspect it might have some updated information as things progress.

I don't think it'll be that funny. I'm guessing mostly dramatic story lines.

You might be right--in this article Odenkirk says that he's been increasingly more interested in "dramedy" (a term he ridicules himself for using) than straight-up comedy.

I'm lukewarm at best to this idea but am up for giving it a shot when it airs.

Did once author a poll for a band that doesn't exist.

Was pleased to learn recently that, like Breaking Bad, most of Better Call Saul is being shot on 35mm.

Am looking forward to the premiere this February.

Do I have to watch Breaking Bad to enjoy this? I fucking love Bob but I don't have the time or desire to consume BB just to "get" his new show.

Based on interviews thus far I think this will be a different beast but still informed by the storyline and sensibilities of the original show. So you probably won't have to see Breaking Bad to enjoy Better Call Saul but doing so would likely enhance the experience.

Am curious to see what they come up with, and how it's structured exactly. They've said that Better Call Saul will take place before, during, and after the timeline of Breaking Bad and I'm wondering if they'll handle this chronologically or skip around a bit. If they're really clever I think they'll deal with some of the original events and characters peripherally.

AMC greenlit two seasons a little while back so they must think they have something good on their hands. Hoping they've devised something interesting. Time will tell.
