CRAP.

I've liked a couple of these dudes' songs okay, but the singer is always the liability. I even like the music in that song from the Letterman thing just fine. The singer is doing schtick, though, and I don't have time for that in an ostensibly serious band. And I don't like his voice.

I don't know what the big deal about that clip is supposed to be. It's just okay indie rock with some goofy, insincere singing. Crickets.

I just realized what band the music most sounds like to me-- Pulp.

It cracks me up to see people on the FB saying stuff like the bassist is deadly boring. He's playing bass perfectly, the parts he plays are melodically dead on and are pushing complexity about as far as is reasonable for the song (the double-picking doesn't only happen in that Pixies pastiche at the very end, he sneaks it in during the song, too). There really isn't any way the bass could be more perfect, I don't think. More flashy or more demanding of attention, sure. But more perfect for the song? Nah.

I don't get how people think the singer is insincere. Seems to me that he's not faking anything.

There might be some glut of other bands doing exactly what these guys are (solid workmanlike pop music with very animated and dynamic singing) but I sure haven't seen it. And of course I haven't been looking. I won't buy any of their albums or seek them out or anything. But I like this performance a lot, and am glad they did it and glad to have seen the video of it.

It's just more shit that sucks in a world full of shit that sucks. I mean, sure, the singer gives the suckage some kind of face to the shit-suckiness. But I've seen spirited, high octane suckage before.

People get to suck on TV, how awesomely novel.

Pretty good.

Good example of how to front a band. Sell it! You need to justify not playing anything!

I kept wanting to see what happened next. That's like 75% of being good. Being interesting. The fact that they'll all schlumps makes it better.

The bass player is quite canny. You already have bro getting his ya-ya's out. So do just enough. The doubled-up part is a delay, I think, imparted for a moment only, which of course I like b/c I do that shit compulsively myself.

I buy it. Dude isn't faking it. It was weird/not weird in nice measures, and it didn't bore me at all.

I hate to admit it, but the front dude has some Daniel Higgs mannerisms, not counting the slalom skiing of course.

But the music isn't good or remotely interesting. Same early '80s post punk/synth/minimalism crap that's been overmined since the 2000s. Funny frontman isn't enough to keep me interested.

It's really bad. The only "random" thing about it is that nobody in the video looks like they would ever listen to this band. Maybe one of the women might buy the CD for her cousin who just came out of the closet and moved to the big city, but that's about it.

I think the bass player, in his quiet way, is almost as into it as the singer. I feel bad for you if you can't see that they're not faking this (at this point).

These guys have been tour horses for three records and have actually developed a pretty dedicated following as a natural extension of said touring. If you youtube any of their live videos you can see people going ape shit over and over. I'm somewhat ambivalent about their music but these guys seem to be absolutely earnest and are doing exactly what they want to do, no reservations. I think it is quite a stretch to assume that three schlubby guys would devote 6 years to playing this kind of music as an exercise in irony. This kind of dedication and sincerity is admirable. Even if not in my musical wheelhouse, I respect 'em.

I saw some quieter stuff that kind of reminded me of Richard Harris today. Or maybe Dave Thomas as Richard Harris? As you might imagine, this isn't a good thing, but I also found other material that had the spirit of that awesome Letterman thing. Real nice vocalist when he's not wandering too far into "The Man Who Would Be King of the Popes" territory.

Nothing fake about it. 3 guys have apparently been making the music they want to make together for 11 years. Letterman performance is captivating and delightful. Not my kind of music, but I like some of the bass playing. Singer guy has all manner of the worst possible vocal affectations, but I love his moves and I'm charmed by his intensity.

There's that certain type of weird guy, kind that always has a really straight haircut and wears like T-shirts with dress pants. Super earnest and it can be hard to tell if they're fearless or just clueless. End up founding inner-city churches in storefronts or becoming street performers and stuff. This seems like one of those dudes.
