In the 'Sconsin Spring (?!) Primary, Senator Chris Larson nearly tied votes with incumbent County Executive Chris Abele, despite being outspent 10 to 1 in political ad money.

More than half the voters chose someone besides the current Mayor, Tom Barrett. Tom will face off with salty Alderman Bob Donovan in April.

Things are shaking up here.

Ringo we do not do the "dibs" thing in MKE. As a matter of fact when I used to live in Riverwest a bunch of us dudes used to all pitch in a shovel almost the whole block, we left the frat-bros shovel there own cars out. A snow day was pretty fun, day drinking hanging with the hood...

Bump, asking for a friend yeah uh huh but can anyone here tell me more about the Washington Heights/Park part of town?

Also, is it just me or do property taxes seem kinda friggin' high for a city its size?

Washington Heights is a cool part of town. Lots of historic homes and buildings, some good places to eat, very close to thee amp tech/engineer in Southeastern WI. Like a lot of parts of the city, there are some sketchy spots, but this is a nice, historic neighborhood that looks and feels like a pleasant, old neighborhood.

I'm on the south side and my property taxes are about 3 grand a year for a little cape cod. They are kind of on the high side, but actually a bit lower than the non-fancy suburban Chicago towns where my folks and siblings live.

3 grand is reasonable. The places I've Zillow'ed (not extravagant houses by any means) have all been over 5 grand, and as much as 7. Which is more than I paid in NW Chicago and we lived on a street with some $500k single family homes.

5-7 thousand sounds very high to me. I'm not as familiar with home prices in that part of town, but it would have to be "improving" at an astounding rate to cause those kind of hikes in home value/property taxes. There are some truly picturesque blocks in that area with beautiful old homes...but I wouldn't think they would drive the whole area up in cost that much.

That was kind of a scattering of Bay View & NE side listings as well (tax info can be hard to find but I did just find a 269k BV house w/ $6,800/yr taxes), which I realize are all on the nicer end of neighborhoods even when some of the homes are affordable. But yeah I thought they were high too (which is justifiable in places with great schools, but a little perplexing here).

So THAT's why the parking tickets are such a racket in this town!

But seriously, i back up everything TomWanderer said -- Washington Heights seems pretty chill overall. BF guitarist Chris owns a house there and he and his wife have been pretty happy. Doesn't sound like his property taxes are in that weird 5-7K range either, although i haven't really picked his brain on that one. But i do agree that from the info gleaned by our house hunt last year, a $3K average was more in line with what we saw in Bay View and surrounding communities.

There's a lot of super cool buildings around there, it also isn't too far from our place (we're just up the way in Enderis Park), or a good Sendik's, and one of the best craft beer stores in the whole city. There is a pretty cool park there, it's huge!

And it's a stones throw from the 175, which turns right into Lisbon. That street basically bisects all of Milwaukee and is a great landmark. There's an area in the upper right of that neighborhood that can get a little rough, but as long as you don't mind a mixed neighborhood that whole area seems pretty cool to me.

Short drive over to Wauwatosa, which is like brunchy, mc-bruncherson, peak-stuff white people like. But has a ton of great restaurants and such.

You are close to the freeway, but not TOO close, which is good since for shows and everything nearly everything happens in Riverwest or Bayview.

Trust me though, that's an easy drive, and since you aren't a binge drinker... like 60-70% of the city it seems, it's not a problem.

I mean, i'm from Oakland soooooo....

It's higher than some especially with the lack of other local taxes, but that's how tons of city and county services (hi! That's me.) are paid for. This new tax bill aims to make that even higher, but that said: the rest of what you are paying for will be much, much lower. So it'll even out.

I'm excited for your "friend" to make this jump.

When the Badger State turned bloody red, Hillary cried and went home to bed, but she's sure to show up this time if Milwaukee clinches the spot for the 2020 Democratic National Convention.

Holy shit, Waukesha County would lose their heads.

Wisconsin Sen. Lena Taylor was cited for disorderly conduct after trying to cash a check with insufficient funds, she called the bank teller a "house nigger" and went into a hell of a rage, prompting police action. All parties involved are attempting to sweep the incident under the rug at this time.
