Yeah, I'm pretty sure it always had the same packaging.

Yeah I only had a CD copy before that I ripped to my computer. Bees LPs always had the leather Bible packaging.

I think the latest pressing is brown faux leather as opposed to black. But I could be wrong

I'm not really sure what Mark Lanegan sounds like when he's on (don't really know his music; any suggestions?) - but on first listen he doesn't blend with the record's style as well as Rabia Shaheen Qazi, for sure.

The track with her on it ("From the Zodiacal Light") is primarily a recycled riff from Bees, too, so that might lead me to favor it a bit more than normal.

Holy fuck, the vocals on their new album are so, so shitty. Some of them sound like Axl Rose being forced to track after eating a giant sandwich while about to pass out on a linoleum floor.

Horrible.

It's a shame too, because the actual music rules hard as fuck.

MrFood wrote:His performance on this record is just criminally under-rehearsed. He's winging it. There are parts where he's just obviously out of key and then parts where he's just off doing his own thing over the top of the guitars and it totally doesn't work. Painful.

I don't mind his vocals on There Is a Serpent Coming so much, but Rooks Across the Gate is pretty poor. He seems to struggle with the -- err -- relaxed tempo of Earth, which is understandable, and gets a bit lost occasionally.

Still enjoying the album.

Sorry to be that dude, but here's his best performance if anybody is interested:

Makes me melt every time. What a gorgeous song.

As much as I love Mark's work, one of his real skills is writing songs that don't show up his limitations: he rarely works that well when he's yoked under somebody else's vision. (His distressed vocals on QOTSA's 'A Song For The Dead' comes to mind.) I wasn't surprised to hear him floundering a little in a more arty setting.

Still split on the new stuff, will continue to mull over them before commenting.

That woman can really sing, though. I've only listened to one of the Lanegan tracks. I'm not really into the whole "I drink rattlesnakes in the moonlight" thing, but I'm going to check out the rest now. It sounds like the instrumentals will be great live.

I was so let down by this album because I usually like Mark Lanegan's voice, but here, he's all over the place doing runs as if he were a blues singer. Earth is amazing without distorted guitar, or without any vocals save for "Pentastar", but this is like everything this band didn't need to do all on one album.

I think the Rabia Shaheen Qazi vocals are pretty awesome and fit into the music rather well. Screaming Tree dudes vocals are not great but then I also listen to bands with cookie monster vocals so what the fuck ever. The music is good. They tried something new. They are evolving. Big deal. Not crap on the new record.

Oh man, I can't stop laughing. So accurate.

This album sucks a fat one. I like the two songs without vocals ok, but they'd be average songs on better Earth albums. For the most part, I can't separate most of the record from the singing that ruins it. If they ever released an instrumental version of the entire record, I'd love to hear the last track without Axl Lanegan losing his illusions all over everything.

If I want vocals on Earth, I'm still going back to Pentastar.

Pentastar remains my favorite. I like the country era because it's reminiscent of some of the Repo Man soundtrack. The new one is ok. It might grow on me. Not every one of their records were awesome balls to me at first. Some took time. Earth 2 confused the fuck out of me when it first came out on Sub Pop, the same label as all the grunge. Now I listen to it every few months.

Would love to know anything about the current tour so I can decide whether to see them in Sacramento in less than 24 hours.

It's just the power trio - Carlson, Herzog, Davies. They played about 70/30 new album/older stuff - among the old stuff: "The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull" and "Old Black". I enjoyed it.

Minutiae: Dylan Carlson was playing through a 6-knob vertical-inputs JCM800 half-stack. The guy standing behind me keeled the fuck over, passed out, and had to be taken outside. Perhaps he lost himself in the meditative aspect of Earth and forgot to unlock his knees...?
