ha, I had a similar experience except all occasions of on screen affection were met with the same disgust.

I feel like the train heist was the most exciting scene in a Star Wars film since the original Death Star blow up. Part train heist, part roller coaster ride, lots of Chewbacca.

this is the first side film to actually feature characters that we already knew. it was always going to be an uphill battle since we grew up with Han Solo and obviously Ford made that character. while I don't think the guy necessarily looked like Han (compared to Glover as Lando, which was played perfectly in addition to his physical likeness) but his attitude was dead on and it worked for me.

it was a completely unnecessary film but it was totally worth it.

That's not really much of a spoiler.

I'd bet the Major is making a double entendre there, referencing the fox's archetypal personality traits in folklore.

RLM and FM jonsolomon hit both the high and low points already for me. I could go either way here; I'll wait and see if it holds up on a second viewing.

Little details from your theater experience: a kid yelled "EW" when Beckett and Val kissed. (Not when Han and Qi'ra did, though.)

Uh, were we at the same screening?

Exact same thing happened when I saw it a second time with the family last Monday!

Bored. So bored I nearly walked out.

Probably more fun as a raining Sunday on the couch film.

Cinematography was fucking diabolical

Nah, I'm in Oregon. Unless you were in Oregon!

I definitely wondered how much racism played into it, but this voice sounded about 2-4 years old, and at that age it could've also been so many other things:
- didn't notice the first kiss for a million possible reasons (spaced out, chasing a popcorn kernel, etc.)
- it was grosser because it was "old people"
- the general scene was quieter so more opportunity to grandstand / make a joke
...who knows. Probably more than one of those things were at work.

Not in Oregon, but also a kid I'd guess was about four. He otherwise sat entranced next to me with his family for the entire film. Don't believe racism was a factor.

Wow there’s a first time for everything, I completely agree with you.
I liked it and I REALLY LIKED the heel turn off the end by Emilia Clarke‘s character.
I’d like to see more of her in future movies.
Gradually getting more ruthless, etc.

Maul at the end was awesome for me. He has quite a bit of backstory from the Clone Wars cartoons and crap, which are definitely better than most give credit for. A cool character totally wasted in that first horror show of a prequel.

Overall, yeah. I enjoyed watching it. I get the criticism too and I wish they wouldn’t have tried to pack so much in. I liked it better than Force Awakens, but not as much as last Jedi or Rogue one.

Things I liked:
Train heist action
Kessel run escape action
The overall story outline was fine. Not great, but fine.
Looking at Emilia Clarke.

Things I disliked:
The dialog was cardboard and felt forced (was actually embarrassed for some of it).
Han Solo and 4-arm dude were poorly acted.
Rapid checking of everything off neatly.
Star Wars movies usually look pretty stunning. This one didn't.
Was kinda hoping this would have some Jabba/Greedo run-ins, but I suppose that would be packing more shit in.

I don't know, guys. This one was a pretty huge letdown for me, and I didn't expect much. I think Ron Howard really fucked this up. Easily my least favorite of the new batch. I'm going to rewatch Phantom Menace and bet I like it more than this one.

Princess Cartoonface von Dramaschool as a hustling street urchin is the most laughable casting since Thor played a hacker in Blackhat.

Finally saw it earlier this week.

The checking off the boxes was a little too obvious (getting his name, winning the Millennium Falcon, being in Tattooine, references to having a price on his head), as was the whole nod to Han being someone that shoots first.

It was perfect for a home sick from work viewing.

Now that I’ve seen it a dozen times or whatever my only waffle is that

SPOILERS

It’s basically the same movie twice. People need gear for a heist, they acquire it, they do the job, then they need gear for another heist, they acquire it, they do the job. Give or take a few details.

I don’t really care that much but if I had to find a fault that’s it. Plus it was shot too dark. I have a special contrast and brightness preset on my tv just for this movie. Otherwise I still fucking love it. It’s the best Chewbacca action we’ve ever seen on film.

It was all right with a lot of meeeeh, but I didn't have any major complaints like I did with any of the other of the new Star Wars films so I guess in some ways it is the best of the bunch? I do agree about the visuals, the colour pallete seemed to taken from a different film all together.

Finally saw it on the Netflix. I thoroughly enjoyed it. A couple things fell flat as other people have already said (box checking, bad lighting on Corellia, etc.) but my biggest complaint was having Darth Maul show up at the end. It's dumb enough that they resurrected him in the expanded universe or whatever the fuck the backstory novels/comics/videogames are called now but if they're gonna do that, keep him in that shit. He's a dumb 1-dimensional character that just looks scary but otherwise carries no weight and they shoulda left him chopped in half on the gunga planet or whatever the fuck from Episode 1. Just disavow anything from that wretched movie. Maybe they developed him more in the comics and stuff but I don't give a shit and I don't have time for any of that.

When Disney bought Star Wars, they excised everything in the "Expanded Universe" from canon except for the movies and the Clone Wars animated series. Darth Maul's character is very well developed in that series (and in the later Star Wars Rebels series, which is generally a lot better than Clone Wars). But your point is fair for non-nerds who aren't familiar with that stuff. Darth Maul is barely even one dimensional in The Phantom Menace, so if that's your only background for him, tossing him into the Solo movie is ridiculous. But, in the context of his character as developed in Clone Wars, it was actually very cool and made a lot of sense.

Also (and I appreciate this is a vice of the genre in general) if being bisected and falling down a massive hole isn't fatal then my measure of 'peril' needs recalibration. Hey, Han experienced a mere flesh wound by comparison!

My kids still say "ew" and roll their eyes every time there is a kiss on screen. Makes me happy, as it reminds me once more that the inevitable complexities of reality have not yet intersected with my children.

I'm surprised by how much I enjoy the Clone Wars series (on the Netflix.)

Where does one find this Star Wars Rebels?
