If you haven't already, pick up The Herd. "Last Chance" and "Wind The Clock Slowly" will rule your life for some time. Hell, so will all of that album.

Same here. I think when I heard them years ago I really liked Nirvana and Nirvana is so much more immediate so their Wipers covers make the originals sound quaint to a 16/17 yr old because they lack the production you're used to. Cut to 15 yrs later and they sound incredible.

This is how it works with the Wipers. I'd hate to know how obsessive I'll get over them by the time I'm 50.

"Someplace Else" is great at sounding other-worldly. Creepy and awesome.

I was looking at all the funny Seattle grunge and The Kingsmen and Hendrix equipment (8 string Hagstrom bass!) at the Experience Music Project, and then I saw Sage's '69 SG with the bigsby and pretty much shit a brick.

Completely great.

Was the later stuff any good? I have only heard the first three albums.

A good a place to start as any. I also recommend The Herd which I think I prefer to the first album. The rest go from good 'n' solid (The Circle, Silver Sail) to a bit patchy (Follow Blind, Power In One). As a general rule you'll nae find anything as experimental as YOA or much in the way of variety, but I reckon later Wipers gets an unjustly bad rap sometimes.

There's also that live one called The Wipers that has good material on it but I cannot recall if the quality was that great. There's a Greg Sage solo album called Straight Ahead that's like him and a twelve string or something. I'm not really in a big hurry to reevaluate it.

Nah, the live album's pretty good. Borders on speed psychosis at points and the guitar tone is as great as you'd expect. But it's mostly stuff off the first three albums so I didn't feel like lumping it in with all those later records. Never been able to get that into the solo albums.

So I was drunkenly fucking around on the digital jukebox the other night and found The Best of Wipers and Greg Sage, that compilation from 1990. Its not the best collection of songs, but its nice to know I can hear Messenger, pretty much whenever I please.

I got my friend into the Wipers like last week when I played him Is This Real? and then he immediately bought the box set. Now I'm on another kick of Wipers stuff and can't seem to get enough.

I think Youth of America clicks with me the most still, but I'm finding things to appreciate about Over the Edge that I hadn't before. His guitar sounds like a monster and I love it.

Also, here's a fucking astounding live version of "So Young" from 1992.
