Have to bump this, and also woefully admit that I hadn't heard "Is this Real?" before today. For whatever reason, this one band slipped through my listening habits that have arguably included EVERYONE ELSE around this essential era in music in the US.

WHAT THE FUCK MAN!

These first two albums are fucking brilliant.

Slightly embarrassed, but hell, another incredible band to discover.
But I digress. Please continue with the squirrel circuit semantic debate.

Bump. Just letting y'all know, Over The Edge was just reissued on 180 gram vinyl. I got it from the Zeno records website, and it sounds great.

Also very cool: Greg Sage personally re-mastered all the out-of-print Wipers albums (like, all of them) and makes them available on high quality CD-Rs on the Zeno website, complete with photocopied artwork. I think this is very very cool, and since it's coming from the man himself, they're as official as reissues can be. Also, it's probably the only format these albums will ever be reissued in ever again.

Just picked up Follow Blind, The Circle, Silver Sail, The Herd, and Power In One. I'd heard some of these before, and now I have very nice looking copies I can listen to whenever. If you don't have these albums, go and order a stack of them - they're only $6 a pop.

The Herd fucking owns, and I'm listening to it constantly. It's their fourth or fifth best album.

Land Of The Lost is a fantastic album. It doesn't have the awesome guitar tone of the first three records, but the songs are just as good.

In a better world, this album would receive more props.

Then again, the cover is hideous.

This statement should be totally ridiculous. But it makes enough sense when you're talking about the Wipers.

I loved this band in the early '80's but have lost touch, if it's still the same band I'm thinking of. I'm off to see if I can get any recent MP3's.

Yeah, I should have said it's nearly as good as the first three. The way I put it, it was almost like saying, "yeah, believe it or not, it's actually better than The Circle!!!" Which, by the way, isn't such a great album.

I was listening to Land of the Lost this week and I totally agree. It is certainly not as frenetic as those first three albums, but there's something really wonderful about it as well.
I've heard the wipers' later albums were woefully self-indulgent, but I don't think that's the case on Land of the Lost...

I can certainly understand their impact but I only enjoy a handful of their songs, a tepid not crap.

To extend the heresy even further, when the magnanimous gentlemen in Police Teeth cite the Wipers and Superchunk as influences I often find myself thinking (whenever I hear songs by either the Wipers or Superchunk), "I should just listen to some Police Teeth instead."

I am certain that they will all consider me totally bonkers for thinking this.

The rest is littered with awesome guitar and dreadful indulgence, but their first seven or eight years were incredible. Mind boggling meld of Link Wray, Leather Nun, the Damned, the Stooges, alien abduction paranoia, societal dread and Neil Young.

A lot of people think I'm bonkers because I love Nirvana and Cheap Trick, but I just can't get into the Beatles.

been listening to them every time I've hit the library lately.

I don't know why.

Love them. They mean it and Sage's guitar is insane.

Is it me, though, or is Over The Edge terribly sequenced? Still a great album, but it just doesn't seem like it flows well at all.

Not just you. The first three tracks are perfect in creating a mood but after that it all goes a bit crazy.
