there's nothing crap about early Stereolab - Peng! is a wonderful debut album and I just love it. Don't go for the later lounge stuff meself, but either of the Switched On albums and I'm happy like a sandboy at high tide.

I agree with the Mr Arrison...

I hear's y'all about the motorik trip, but sound too much like Neu? I have heard more Brazilian Tropicalia rip offs in the last Ten Years or so then Neu...
Was a big fan around the Emperor Tomato/Dots and Loops era... have pretty much been boring (apart from small doses) since then.

Still, Not Crap.

My exposure to Stereolab is limited.
Everything I've heard sounded like Neu!

It was ok, but I prefer Neu!

I love the early Stereolab, but John McEntire started to be involved in the band, it became shite.
So I'll go with CRAP.

Not crap but with major waffles. I have more or less all their output I think, a friend is really into them and automatically assumes I am too- 'hey I got xxxx for a fiver!' Uh what? 'The stereolab one! I've sent you copies!' Errr... great? Out of the 20 odd things I have, the good tracks could be condensed onto a few CDs and then you'd have some good records but unfortunately stereolab don't seem to realise this and keep churning out a load of crap for the sake of it. All the albums have at least one thing worth hearing but very few make them actually worth buying. IMO the most interesting thing they've done is the track they did with Nurse With Wound, Simple Headphone Mind but most of the interesting comes from Stapleton anyway. Except the Red Crayon Spiders vocal which is ace.

Yes, Mary Hansen was killed in a bike accident 2002. She was only 36. Mary was a very very sweet person at it was and remains very sad news.

Yes.

Stereolab are an exceptionally conceptual band. The delibarate juxtaposition, for example, between their often abstract and political lyrics and the shimmering, soporific music they make implicates a worldview or social commentary that will escape many who haven't spent at least some amount of time with their records. I feel that they are almost ironic at times, but in a way that is really interesting and intelligent.

Stereolab makes really advanced pop music. I like them a lot.

NOT CRAP.

I agree.

Stereolab are a great band in conception and execution. They have got some Neu! about them but I think they are much much more. I reckon they are one the cleverest bands around. Their boringness is their key strength.

Not crap for their driving grooves.

Not crap for their vocal harmonies.

Not crap for their weird analogue sounds.

Not crap for their Marxist lyrics.

Power to the people is what I say. Up with Anglo-French Marxist Rock groups!

Thirded... or whatever, I didn't read after Cranius...

I saw the French female singer's band before Slint in London, I think I'm the only person in the room that wasn't waiting for them to get the hell of the stage.

Oh, and plus on the guys from The Chills started the band...

Not crap - 0 WF

I stopped listening to most stereolab after sound dust because every album stopped doing something interesting. They seemed to be playing with the same old tricks. Yeah, the music is great, but it's just more of the same.

I'll never stop listening to Mars Audiac Quintet. One of my favorite albums!

There's nothing crap about Stereolab simply because they don't give a fuck to what people think about their music.
They carry on regardless of whether people (ie music fans or music journalists) like their music or not !

I stopped listening to their fucking music ages ago but I know if I listen to them NOW, I would like some songs simply because they are FUCKING STEREOLAB !!!!

The're fucking untouchable in what they fucking do.

Having a Stereolab morning today.
I like them because they are so unafraid of being ridiculously intellectual, hip and nerd about everything. it has some lounge, some krautrock, 60s pop, and early electronica, everything played superbly. cold? obviusly, what do you expect?

not crap.

I personally like their Neu!-ishness. I do agree that they've long since peaked, but Margarine Eclipse wasn't that bad, and when I saw them live a year and a half ago, they were great... and yes, Laetitia Sadier can totally have my children.
