What are you talking about dude? The Flowers of Romance is one of the greatest albums of all time, and much better than First Issue.

Keith is there, but not Wobble. Most of the songs are Keith playing synth, Martin Atkins on drums and John screeching and yelping over top of it in a very nihilistic fashion.

No Jah on the album I don't believe. Levene does everything I think???. But don't let that scare you. What a great album. The drumming alone is worth the listen.

You've got to be kidding. I mean, they are better than The Fall, but The Fall is much better than Siouxie and the Banshees.

Keith Levene's arm on Flowers of Romance: So swollen with trackmarks he could barely hold his guitar.

That album sounds like a huge studio project with Martin Atkins and an engineer with access to many compressors spending countless hours getting drum loops and fat-beats to tape. Then Levene and Lydon would stop in and lay down some tinny keyboards and middle-Eastern sounding vocals on top of said fat beats. Somehow it manages to be brilliant, even with Wobble gone and damn near no bass (or guitar if you consider Levene's junk habit). God damn if the lyrics aren't the most misanthropic, bitter and sarcastic poems on tape.

It blows my mind to think about how much better it could have been without Levene on smack and Wobble absent.

Still, NOT CRAP.

Everything post F.O.R.> CRAP.

Actually, according to Atkins, Levene was sitting behind the desk for a lot of that record. I remember reading this interview with him about the making of that record where he claimed Keith knew nothing about the synths he was using but was very inventive in the studio and could hence make an amazing record out of a bunch of unrehearsed noodling (with a little technical help from the engineers).

On a side note, one of the tracks on there has a loop of some miscelaneous shred of tape Keith pulled of the floor of the studio from some other band who'd been in there earlier. It's the one in like a 3.5/4 time signature. I forget the name.

Flowers of Romance seriously might be my favorite record ever. As much as I like some of the other stuff, PIL was always mostly FOR for me.

"Banging the Door", "Phenhagen", "Flowers of Romance", these are some of the most crazy and great songs ever written.

The collage technique is put to use perfectly and always in service of whatever is going on at the time. In that way, FOR owes a lot to Tomorrow Never Knows.

As pointed out, the way it somehow all holds together is pretty impressive.

You can just smell the smack.

Goddamnit I love that record. And then you got all that other crazy/great stuff PIL did. They started to suck later? I don't care.

NOT CRAP.

I agree with the first statement.

The second one is very suspect.

Hey, Chris, thanks for posting that interview! It's a fun read.

The Flowers of Romance
is my favorite, too.

I don't want to weigh in on whether or not they're better than The Fall. There's room for both in my squishy black heart.

uh, ya got that wrong.

about as good as the fall, if you culled out half of the Fall's catalog.

Suzee and the Banshees not even in the same neighborhood. A soft-goth band for girls who thought the cure was too dark. Give me a break!

PiL has chunks of Suzee and the Banshees in it's stool....

Very difficult to compare The Fall and PiL, since both have extremely bad moments, and extremely great moments. Pil is better than The Fall, I would say, simply because of the first 4 Pil albums.

not crap, everything up to and inculding Flowers is absolutely amazing. Everything after that is absolutely crap, but those first three albums (plus various singles, the odd video and television appearance) far outweigh the long slow decline.

John Lydon, a nominee for "Most Betrayed Their Talents".

Hey, thanks. I really enjoyed reading that. Funny, I've never heard that fucking record. I think my sister still has it, maybe I'll give it a spin over the holiday visit.
