It is my humble opinion that their last three records are the best things they released (It'll Be Cool, Italian Platinum and Lifestyle, respectively). You could do no wrong by picking up any one of them.

As for the early stuff, check out In The West (tho it might be harder to find). The drumming on that is bigger than God's balls.

Yeah but what about Firewater and Developer? Excellent stuff to be found on that. Also, curious about the title of the song "Ice Station Zebra"? Coincidence or is this related to the 1968 submarine film with Rock Hudson and Ernest Borgnine of the same name? Does a member of the band have a penchant for submarine WWII movies in general? What is the story?

Yeah, Blueblood is genius too. All their records feature great songwriting with top notch lyrics, great sounds, bare bones arrangements with surprising dynamics, and impressive over-all musicianship. I bet ya I've listen to 'Tarnished Angel' from Firewater at least once a week for the past year! A great band.

i used to think they were quite good but these days i've really started to think they would have been more suited to another line of work.

i get the impression they'd be good at something like making quilts y'know?

i hated blueblood and i wasn't into developer at all.

Lifestlye was cool though. Really like some of the stuff on there. Basically, I think they peaked with firewater...

I only have It'll Be Cool but I've listened to it a lot in the last month or two.

I always have the line "...friends Brian, Gavin, John, the Italian" stuck in my head.

And then I always wonder if the Italian is Steve.

Italian Platinum or Firewater. I love them both.

Geez. I forgot about this band.

Salut Tim, you have made my night!

The above two quotes are where we part company. This was a band with plenty of life and innovation left in it. It'll Be Cool signalled a whole new period of growth that could have happened.

Rocking, gorgeous, stunning, heart-wrenching. What a beautiful band. RIP.

I agree with It'll Be Cool I really enjoyed that one and it was very different from any of the previous records. And I loved the title. It was like what any silkworm fan probably was thinking when they heard about the new silkworm record coming out!! It'll be cool!

My band Shock Radar is actually working on a Silkworm cover right now. Tarnished Angel!

I second It'll Be Cool. I also agree this is a great title. I think of someone trying to convince a friend to go to a party, so "It'll Be Cool" is said. The line works and the party is pretty cool, but the guy who was on the fence about going doesn't fit in with the other guests so he just sits on a comfortable couch and gets drunk off a bottle of wine. people come and go and sit next to him, occasionally acknowledging him but never engage in any real conversation with him. Eventually he gets up and stumbles home from the cool party.

Don't Look Back is such a great song.

What is the song that has the line, "Have you ever been happy in your whole life?" or something like that? I've only heard it once live.

I adore pretty much all of their records (although I could never get into Blueblood. I have to try again). I was still on the fence about Italian Platinum until I got to the line "Only a fool gives up sex for Lent." Then I was hooked.

Whenever I sing "Ooh La La" in my head these days, it's the Silkworm version. That about says it all.

Yeah they had awesome lyrics.

Never use a cruelty where a joke can do in it's place.

one of my fave lines ever.

They had a great way with words and one liners.

Developer
Italian Platinum
It'll Be Cool
Lifestyle
Blueblood
Firewater
Libertine

All so fucking brilliant.

Goddamn, they were great. And I agree with whoever said "Don't Look Back" is a brilliant song. I will still be rocking out to that at 70. Definitely. A perfect fucking song. I saw them play it at what I think was their last Austin show. The months between me hearing it live and when I got to hear it again on It'll Be Cool were excruciating.

Cannot wait to get my hands on a Bottomless Pit recording (whenever that may be).

P.S. someone on silkworm.net recently posted four unused tracks from Developer and they're equally killer.

dude you left out In the West which is god quality as well as Le' Ajar (spelling?)

I unfortunatly missed silkworm everytime they played here in NYC.

one of my big regrets was not going to see them.

i thought they'd play until they were 100.

that band will go down in history for me as one of the greatest.

Which tracks were they? I have the Japanese version of Developer, and it has (I think) six tracks not on the US version...one of which might be my favorite SKWM song ever.
