I experience a supremely intelligent and powerful force in the universe. And I trust what He puts in my path, even when I really don't like it and it seems like too much to deal with (at the time).

I am of course referring to the one who calls Himself...

Without the idea of god, we'd be short of several 15-page+ spanning threads here at EA.

I'm not sure whether that makes it N/C, though.

Matthew, where are you?

Idea of which God? The christian one is medicore at best. Old-testament style God is a lot more interesting and fun to read about.
Ancient Greek's, they really know what's good. Beautiful chicks, wars, God's taking sides in human conflicts, more beutiful chicks - NOT CRAP.

The idea of good as the dude who sits somwhere above and takes care of things...? Meh. I like the idea Santa Claus better.

Our planet is one tiny insignificant rock orbitting one average, ordinary star in the outskirts of the Milky Way, itself just one ordinary galaxy among billions. When you look up into the night sky on a clear night, you can hardly see any stars at all. If you could see all of them, if our eyes were better and there was less dirt in the universe, the sky would be completely white. There would not be the smallest gap between the stars that you see. (in theory, anyway, see the footnote for more details).

For every star that you can see, there are thousands of galaxies, each containing thousands of millions of stars.

The Milky Way itself is an insignificant speck. Our solar system is an insignificant speck within that. The image at the top of this page is from the NASA archives. It was taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, and the area of sky that is represents is approximately 1/30th the apparent diameter of the full moon. As you can see for yourself, it is packed with galaxies. Galaxies, not stars.

Religion used to teach that the Earth was the centre of the universe, the single most important place that God created.

Now, we know better. If the Earth was destroyed tomorrow, the universe would neither miss us nor mourn our passing. Would you notice one grain of sand missing from the beach?

We think we are special, and that supremely powerful beings look after us.
We are not special, we are simply the result of a (probably very common) chemical accident billions of years ago, in a place where the conditions are right for life to flourish.

The same thing probably happens all over the universe, and in many places there will be life. Some will be more advanced than us, others less advanced.

In many places, the conditions will not be right for life. There are probably entire galaxies or clusters of galaxies where life will never arise, because the conditions there are too extreme. Galaxies with supermassive black holes, areas of stellar genesis (such as the Orion Nebula), maybe regions close to quasars may never produce life due to intense radiation or gravitational disturbances.

We are certainly lucky, yes, but special? No.

I suspect this of being a transcript of the spoken word segue from the new Begin By Gathering Supplies Record. Read in a "Stone Henge" style, of course.

i'd believe in "god" if i could find even one thing that unifies all religions or even unifies the need to create them.

maybe you believe in god, maybe you dont, and im sure you have your reasons for either choice. but one thing is for certain...

without the idea of god (which is what this poll is about, correct?), we'd have a lot less good art in the world today. that spans literature, music, painting/drawing/etc, film, and just about whatever else you consider art. whether people are inspired by the idea of god on a spiritual level, or want to subvert traditions that deal with the idea of god (bill hicks would have had a few less good jokes), or want to comment on the total narrative of religion across the world, etc, the idea of god has found a place in lots of good art.

and without the idea of god, we wouldnt have the idea of satan, and thus we wouldnt have slayer as we know them today.
I composed and produced the album California is Cold by Shahmen. Check out the video we just put out for the song Poison.

I come from the school of thought that humanity needs to grow the fuck up and stop believing in a fairy godmother or whatever spiritual gibberish you want to lie to yourself about. The pie in the sky when you die or a god on your side keeps people from dealing real problems instead of saying its god’s will. CRAP! No waffles for you, Jesus!

I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with the idea of god, I don't believe it exists(god itself not the idea) but I don't think it's wrong. BClark makes a valid point we wouldn't even be having this discussion without the idea, as with most everything the idea itself is relatively benign it's peoples misinterpretations and desire for power and control that ruin it.
