VU VS SY

Postby Lonesome Bulldog on Thu Jun 11, 2009 2:06 am

Kim vs. Nico. Reed vs. Rinaldo. Cale vs. Moore. Etc etc.

It would be awesome if we could describe based on Thunderdome-relevant abilities, but since most T-domes never dig deep on the melee tip just compare the music/vibez.

Johnny, this is fucking disgraceful. SY does not belong up there with Velvet Underground.

Scott Baio and the ThunderChicks would get my vote before SY.

Wooo! I'm about to get my ass kicked! I like VU but I think they're vastly overrated. Yes, they were really innovative and really good at their peak but they also made a lot of nonsense. Funny it also applies to SY to some extent, but overall SY are a far better band. SY.

Sonic Youth. They have made five albums which I love, a couple of them more than I love any Velvet Underground record. Plus, after close to 30 years they can occasionally still blow brains out live.

I have to say that I never, ever liked Sonic Youth. I didn't like them live, I don't like any of their albums.

Sonic Youth would seem a lot less offensive to members of this board if there were no internet, and The Velvet Underground would have come off ten times douch-ier had there been the internet in the sixties. Still, it's a close call for me.

SY!

No, I don't care about the stupid stuff any band members say as much as I do their music.

And I can't stand Sonic Youth's crappy slop rock. I'll take Velvet Underground's sloppy rock as it was done several decades earlier, with more and better drugs, clothing and gear.

Velvet Underground, no contest.

I like Sonic Youth a lot, esp. for the self-titled thing, Confusion is Sex, the live Sonic Death alb., and particularly Bad Moon Rising, but none of these touch the first three VU records, or Live 1969, or any of the other VU stuff. I'm not the biggest fan of Loaded, but aside from that and the fake, Doug Yule-led VU, they're pretty unbeatable.

I'm going to base this strictly on the music that I like from each band, and bare in mind that neither of these bands are ones that I'm feverishly into.

I like only one record from each band, really. Velvet Underground's & Nico and Sonic Youth's Sister. I've heard the other Sonic Youth records and I'm just not into them. I've heard the other Velvet Underground records and hated them.

Sister, in my opinion, is a pretty spotty record and I can't recall any songs right off hand. & Nico I can recall at least three songs right now. Make that four. Nope, five.

Sister, now that I look at it, has two real stand out moments for my tastes and those are basically the first two songs. The whole of & Nico is a stand out moment; there are, to my ears, no lulls where I tune the record out.

Velvet Underground for me.

this thread is ludicrous. i'm fine with SY, but they don't belong even in the same sentence with VU. even being so punk, ans so full of teen rage and avant-garde, and noisy and shit and 20 years later, they could never make something as intense as White Light/White Heat. Listen close enough to that album and you can listen to SY's whole career.

I like both of these bands immensely, but I'm going to base my decision solely on the vocals of Kim Gordon. This being the case, Velvet Underground wins, hands down.

You know, I can't help but think that Kim Gordon records all of her vocals while dropping a deuce.
