don't be so hard on yourself. it had to be done by someone, oh courageous one.

Big Black wins because i love Steve. that and for Kerosene being a most fortunate conjunction of music and a miserable, suburban teenage me. never set fire to anything though. slashed some tires once but that was an accident.

Oh goddamn.

Both of these are Top Ten bands for me, but I think I'm going to have to go with Big Black. Smaller catalog = higher good:bad song ratio.

The Fall, literally because they made more records and indeed, still are.

If it was the Marc Riley era versus Big Black, that might be closer but I think I'd still give it to The Fall by a nose. There's something about that particular line-up which could basically do no wrong in my eyes.

Above ALL else......

Though there are only about 6 Fall albums that are up there with Songs and Atomiser, there are another 30 or so that are pretty damn good as well.

Big Black. They rock harder and Steve's lyrics. I just find them more engaging. I respect the Fall's back catalog and the influence they exerted. Waffle factor for when I saw them live in 2003, which was abysmal. I wish I had been around to see Big Black.

I listened to one "The Fall" record and it was boring.
I'll say Big Black but I don't know The Fall enough.

Strangely, I do not feel like revisiting any of my Big Black records & I really don't have any explanation for it. On the other hand, I cannot or rather, do not even try to understand anything that Marky Smith utters, but there's something about those Fall records, especially the compilation "Palace Of Swords Reversed", which makes me not want to stop listening to them.

The Fall.

edit: though I still retain fishingrhodesque (but non-violent) feelings about "Kerosone". "set me on fyyree.".twwaaaaaaaaaaa... never gets old.

For me, it's Big Black. It's really no contest. I reach for The Hammer Party, Songs, or Rich Man's... far more than the Fall.

Big Black was my introduction to underground music (all I'd ever listened to before that were classical and my mom's old rock n' roll and folk records) almost seventeen years ago. I would never deny them as one of my favorite bands ever, and I still listen to Songs... and Atomizer today.

That being said, Hex Enduction Hour is the only record that consistently stacks up to Fun House and Q: Are We Not Men.... on my "Favorite Records Ever" list. Also off the top of my head: Slates, Live at the Witch Trials, This Nation's Saving Grace, The Peel Sessions box set (the greatest box set by any artist ever, in my opinion)..... the list goes on.

Good match, but I give it to the Fall overall.

If we are assuming whether or not you were have to choose one and ultimately never
listen to the other, I think I would go with The Fall.

My favorite Fall albums are each very different, and sometimes even stunningly diverse within each album. Every time I listen, I find something new.

With Big Black, I can sit here and recite almost every line verbatim.
Most of those songs are the type of tunes that you have imprinted in your brain. For example, the guitars in the main lick of "passing complexion" will always be embedded in my head, like the intro to zep's "the ocean" or the drum intro to ELO's "Don't Bring Me Down."

But I'll never have Mark Smith caterwauling "pay your RATES-SAH!"

At least not yet, so I need more time.
But I digress. Please continue with the squirrel circuit semantic debate.

The Fall is great, and I will likely listen to them more often now than I will Big Black, but Big Black gets the vote.

This is how I feel. I love The Fall but Big Black were one of the bands that got me into punk rock and making my own music.
