Hippies, any day. Some of my best friends are old hippies. (No neo-hippies, though; these people are like 55 years old.) Also, Jimi Hendrix.

I don't have any hipster friends at the moment. It could happen, but it seems unlikely.

As for these two demographics' stereotyped musical tastes: Tie. As in "equally bad."

Those aren't hipsters.

They're Boden-catalogue hipsters.

It's a tie. I'd probably rather befriend a hippie dude but would much rather make intercourse with a hipster lady friend.

I have a friend who doesn't know the difference, which can be pretty amusing sometimes.

tie, but perhaps hipsters are a bit less misogynist, which gives them a bit of an edge in my book.

god, they're both awful though.

purely on the basis that there are no hipsters within a hundred miles of me but there are indeed many, many hippies locally, quite a high proportion of which are ignorant, moralistic, smug, paranoid, detestable fuckheads, the hipsters win.

I choose hippies. I really, really hate ostentation and pretense; hipsters I've talked to always seemed contrived and socially "on".

Good hippies: share weed, like Hendrix, laid back
Bad hippies: paranoid, holier than thou, like horrible jam bands

Good hipsters: share PBR, like The Beach Boys, dress well?? I'm reaching
Bad hipsters: aloof, ADD prone, shallow

There's all kinds of overlap there isn't there?

What about a hippiester? (pronounced like a revolutionary front: hipEEster)

They're just general terms, usually applied by the media as a catch-all description. I don't really know what either term means either. It's an individual thing. You can just decide what it is for yourself and then use it as a scapegoat for whatever you dislike in fashion, culture and trending.

I didn't put any explanation because I thought it'd be funny to see what people say without prompting. Are you supposed to choose who would win in a fight? Who you'd rather befriend or have sex with? Which ambiguous group is better or worse?

Hipsters smell nicer and have immaculate homes, also, most of them are middle class so probably don't ask to borrow money that you'll never see back.

But hippies are easier to kill.

I went to art school. there were both hipsters and a few "hippies". While some of the kids with stupid sunglasses and fixed gear bikes turned out to be hard working, dedicated, funny, smart people, the hippie types were always lazy, self-righteous jackasses. I'm not sure it's fair, though - these kids were possibly stoners who thought they were hippies. They certainly listened to enough jam band music and smoked enough. Are people my age even capable of being hippies?

Either way, hipsters win.

I can't decide, it comes down to the individual. At their worst they're both lazy fucking assholes.

i kind of like hippies on paper, but virtually never in practice.
elements of hippiedom and hipster can, in tasteful moderation, be perfectly acceptable elements of someone's persona(lity). but i suppose a "full-on" hipster would just be a trend-hopper who makes you feel excluded. a "full-on" hippie is actually worse to me though, because the disparity between hippie ideals (benevolence, easygoingness, idealism) and the reality of what people are really like deeply bums me out. plus i hate the cultishness around jam bands -- i don't even mind the music so much as the missionary attitude of the fans i've met and the monomania. AND hippies are often into mumbo jumbo and i hate mumbo jumbo. spare me the astrology and the healing stones etc.
