Either/Or: The Police or Rush

Postby placeholder on Thu Sep 09, 2010 11:18 am

Two atrocious three-piece bands in which the showoff-y, overplaying drummers are–against all odds–more irritating than the obnoxious singer/bassists.

Strangely, the guitarists in both bands are comparatively innocuous.

Which of these bands is less bad?

They are pretty much equivalent bands to me, but I think The Police may be marginally less grating. I can probably make it all the way through "Can't Stand Losing You."

Rush occasionally stumbles on to a cool synth sound, but the context is always so embarrassing that I cannot enjoy the cool synth sound.

Geddy Lee mentioned liking Hüsker Dü in an interview sometime in the '80s. "The Big Money" is basically lifted from "Chartered Trips." Geddy also talked at various points about The Pixies. "Time Stands Still" is another quasi-Mould riff.

Stingo, he does not strike me as one who rocks out to Hüsker Dü.

Few things can override my disgust for Ayn Rand, but Stingo is one of them.

RUSH.

"Subdivisions" doesn't entirely suck. Neither does "Limelight."

I can't think of a single Police song that doesn't bore the shit out of me. Several actively annoy me.

Aimee Mann once said that Rush were extremely hilarious, "except for Neil Peart. He wasn't funny at all." It's endearing that two members of Rush are extremely funny and that the drummer isn't one of them. Also: "Great White North"? The wall-of-washing machines gag? Legitimately funny.

Witness the Police being "funny": when they switch around hats in the "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" video. You guys! Ha ha! Such cut-ups!

So I'm going with Rush.

WF for Copeland's ability to drum tastefully when the song requires it.

Rush. Besides other reasons, Sting's voice annoys me while Geddy's doesn't.

Ayn Rand influence vs. Asshole white reggae influence: Rush
Lamer singer: Sting
Drumming: Neil Peart
The songs themselves: Rush
Overall consistency: The Police

Rush still wins.

It's unfair to single out The Police in regards to "white reggae influence," virtually the whole of England was doing it at the time. Watching the Copeland video Tocharian posted in the Police thread makes it clear just what it actually meant to them.

Yeah, because those bands loved dub and rocksteady.

Exactly. White dub and rocksteady > white reggae.

Standing atop a fence, eyeing my options. Do I jump in the shit or do I jump in the crap?

Damn. I have to go with Rush. I don't like them, but Sting drives me up the fucking wall.

I feel like this is one of those scenarios where someone asks "would you rather fuck a llama or a goat...like, if you really had to?" and then you play along and say "goat," and then your friend runs around telling all your friends that you want to fuck a goat.

So i'm not choosing.
