10 years ago I would have said The Pixies, but in 2010 I'm voting The Breeders.

I'm a little surprised that this hasn't happened yet.

The Pixies were an important thing to me at the tail end of high school. A huge influence on me. They were also another one of those gateway bands for me. I'd probably enjoy listening to any Pixies record you'd care to play, even today. Thing is, I almost never want to listen to them anymore. I feel I've exhausted their reserves.

I got into the Breeders at about the same time, and their music keeps getting richer. I can't remember the last time I put on a Pixies record, but I've listened to the Breeders regularly, at least once a month, for about 8 years. They are a perennial favorite, ranking highly for me regardless of how my tastes have changed over the years. Who knows if that will last into my thirties and forties, but I know the Breeders mean a lot to me now.

Their arrangements are more clever, their ensemble playing more subtly tricky. The Pixies had an overt weirdness to them, in demeanor, imagery and atmosphere. The Breeders' strangeness takes longer to figure out. They are better than the Pixies at nearly everything the Pixies do, and that side of the Breeders probably accounts for less than half their songs.

They succeed at most of the things they try, and their mistakes are always at least admirable. Like when Neil Young makes mistakes like Trans or Landing On Water. Even on his fuckups he was trying something new and being genuine about it. The handful of Breeders songs that don't work at all lend their records a sense of intimacy, like you're being invited into the band and hearing their process at work.

The Breeders, easy.
My name is Mike, and I play music in Stripper Deville.

I'll be very surprised if The Breeders don't win this PRF poll.

The Pixies, by a zillion miles.

The Breeders music seems more natural and agreeable to me these days in all its strangeness; less an affection than whatever Frank Black was trying to do with the Pixies.

Literally the easiest crap/not crap in history.

Breeders.

The Breeders' music consistently blows my mind, over their entire catalog.

I have never, ever enjoyed the music of the Pixies.

Nothing in the Pixies' catalog can touch Pod or the Safari EP. Breeders.

BREEDERS BREEDERS BREEDERS! If I could pick anyone in the entire universe to join my band it would easily be Kim. She could add unique charisma to any type of music. Sometimes I think 'would she even like me if we met?' and I get sad thinking the answer would be no. I love her. LOVE.

man, all of their albums are 100% perfect. Even that Amps album is fucking perfect.

The Pixies are a band that plays rock and roll.

The Breeders are a rock and roll band.

This is fantastic. I will probably be borrowing this quite heavily from here on out.

The Safari ep alone smokes most everything by the Pixies.

No question, it's the Breeders.

Two or three songs into Pod had me realizing that I already liked them more than the meager two or three songs total that I enjoyed by the Pixies. Then after Pod finished that first time through, I played it from start to finish again and pretty much forgot about any Pixies material whatsoever.

Still need to listen to Safari.

The Breeders easily win this one.
