Over-rated! Always has been. Always will be. I can't change that. I just deal with it.

a visionary

Postby O H Lee on Thu Nov 20, 2003 9:36 pm

Despite his popularity and uberdiva personality, he's taken his music anywhere he wants without compromise. The world is a better place cuz of Prince.

Did I really see him on the 1999 tour in Peoria?!?!?!?!

Not crap, then later, crap. But the early non crap overshadows the crap.

The Ani DiFranco thread has become a Prince thread, but here is the real Prince thread.

I never listen to Prince, but he's not crap. He is one of the greatest all-around "musicians" (taken literally) of the rock era, and his songwriting and arranging talents are formidable.

However, there is a lot of bullshit that comes with Prince, both musically and personally. Always has been. The waffle iron is pressing non-stop, with maple syrup futures on the rise.

Prince is not crap. Sometimes I wonder if you people are on drugs, and if so why you're not on better ones.
I never thought I'd recover from the trouble that Youtube put me through...

Yes, you did--and I saw him on the same tour in Louisville. And it's one of the best fucking shows I've ever seen.

I don't care how many iffy albums he's put out since Sign O' the Times, up to that point, they were ALL GOOD! In the wunderkind, play-all-the-instruments-yourself school of black artists, I'll take Prince over Stevie any day, if for no other reason than because Prince put the guitar back into black music, post-disco, and returned us to the glory days of Sly, JB, Jimi, and P-Funk, all of whom he was obviously inspired by. And believe me, that motherfucker can play the guitar.

Also, I saw him on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert right after his first album came out, maybe 1979, and Prince performed in nothing but a see-through plastic trenchcoat and black bikini briefs. And his band totally rocked. He always has a kick-ass band.

Also, the guy writes hits--great, catchy, danceable songs--that still sound really, really good. Great dancer, too. And singer. And writer. And player. And producer.

Good songwriter, Good vocalist, but as I just stated in the "bottom 10" poll, He is one of them way over the top in love with himself vocalists.

As far as Prince a genius, I like to save that title for Scientists, Philosophers and the like. Not minstrels.

So - not crap. Not genius.

His stuff since like 90 has been too much of a hip hop orientated R&B for my tastes, but it is still good for what it is. He is a great multi instumentalist, yes, but I don't think that ranks you with Einstein.

Prince ... Good singer, great guitarist, brilliant songwriter and arranger, visionary and inventive producer, and leader of a number of absolutely killer live bands. Miles Davis called him "a funky little motherfucker," and I wouldn't even dream of arguing that point. If you think he's crap, I suggest you probably haven't listened to enough of his music. Get 1999, Sign o' The Times, Dirty Mind and The Black Album and start exploring from there.

100% Not Crap.

NME wrote:The star hides lucky 'purple tickets' in copies of new album

Prince is launching his new album with a Willy Wonka-style competition.

The star has aped the book 'Charlie And The Chocolate Factory' by placing lucky purple tickets inside a few copies of new album '3121'.

The tickets will allow the fans who find them to attend a private concert to be held at Prince's Minneapolis home later in the year.

Part of me really dislikes this gimmick to boost album sales.

A much larger part of me just really really wants a purple ticket.
Why do you make it so scary to post here.
