Either/or: The Cure vs. The Smiths

Postby Andy on Mon Apr 02, 2012 6:36 am

In the late 80s of my memory, these two were a matching set. You couldn't hear one mentioned without the other. As soon as The Queen is Dead was over, you put on Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me.

For me, songs + Marr win it.

This hasn't been done yet?

Definitely The Smiths.

Cure, hands down. The Smiths never did anything for me.

This has to have been done already....

Anyway, it's the Smiths. The guitar, the rhythm section -- even that poncy bugger who sang was the perfect fit for the band, even if he may seem like a git.

Morrissey was hilarious when he wanted to be; a trait I've found sadly lacking in his post-Smiths work. Marr's choice of projects over the past 20 years has left something to be desired as well. I think they need each other.

The Cure are good when they're good. When they're not, I see them as everything the Smiths are made out to be: dour, self-flagellating, crying in mom's basement tween girls. At least the Smiths could make me dance and laugh. I could probably make a 2-disc "best of" compilation of everything the Cure have ever done and be satisfied; while all the Smiths' records are essential.

The Cure, no contest.

Pornography, Faith, Seventeen Seconds, and Disintegration are better than any Smiths record, and I love The Smiths!

Agreed, though I don't see much connection of either with the Birthday Party other than the Cure also had big hair and eye makeup.

You're right. Not much of a connection in terms of the music, but I guess a tangential association because I see all of these bands prefiguring so called "goth" elements in subsequent bands.

The Smiths are blessed with every advantage, and yet, somehow, The Cure. Robert Smith was/is obsessed with Morrissey in a Brian Wilson vs. McCartney/The Beatles way, right?

Smiths.

I hated, HATED the Smiths and listened to plenty of the Cure for years. I can't hear Robert Smith without wanting to barf off my eyeliner but the Smiths, whose work I am much less familiar with, has been perking up my ears the last few years.

"You can not be influenced by Johnny Marr 'cos he's unique; you can't play what he plays. Even HE can't play what he plays. He's told me stories of trying to re-create the beginning of "How Soon is Now" and it's like fucking being in an Abbot & Costello fucking sketch y'know...even HE'S not as good as he is."

Actually a lot tougher than I initially thought. Both bands are about equal in my affections for entirely different reasons.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

In the someday, what's that sound.
