The first four Metallica albums are fucking awesome. But Sabbath smokes them.

Let's not be silly.

Even if this was close, Sabbath's cover art smokes Metallica's.

Sabbath by a few light years.

Ride the Lightning - Justice is the greatest music ever made, just full on eclipses even Sabbath, anything they ever did, in my world.

Should've made it Sabbath vs. Zep. Then it would've been vaguely close.

Sabbath.

The tritone that opens "Black Sabbath" is cooler than anything Metallica have done

Here's that thread for anyone interested.

It feels so wrong to vote against Sabbath, but I think I'm gonna do it.

'Justice' alone beats the four Sabbath albums.

Black Sabbath

It's hard to hate on Kill 'Em All, but, man, Side 2 bites. Its best songs can't save it. I kind of hate it.

I have tried with Metallica, but I don't understand the appeal, period. Meanwhile, Black Sabbath was not only about as original as it gets, but generally ruled for the better part of a decade. Enough of the Metallica worship on this forum (unless you want to pit them against the early Dio Sabbath records).

Seriously?
I'm beginning to think Albini has made me a sound nerd because to me that album sounds like dog shit. There's no bass whatsoever and it's the beginning of Lars' drumming sound like someone beating on cardboard.
Here comes the pissball, shithead - get ready!

Never thought about these two bands side by side before. Realised I feel the same way about each of their first three records.

First: sloppy but super enthusiastic and energetic take on the rock scene of their day.
Second: still transitioning but finding moments of individual power and identity.
Third: triumphant, fully realised, redefined the genre.

So it comes down to Volume 4 vs … And Justice For All as the deciding factor for me.
Volume 4 is the best example of a rock band working as a cohesive unit. It is text book.
But Justice: what a unique record. Such bitterness! Such fury!

It feel weird not voting for Sabbath, but, on reflection, and allowing for the cut off point:

Metallica.

The impersonal Grammy-sensibility 'good' production of the Black Album sounds more like dogshit to me. Even if I didn't like Justice, I'd still credit them for doing something so wilfully ugly - cold sheets of crushed guitar and thin, clicky drums wringing out this mechanical, gouged music. I've heard fan mixes with restored bass and they're not as potent or singular.
