Do you have a preference over the Sonic Youth vocalists?

I think it's a shame that Lee doesn't get to sing more. The Karen songs are some of their best. In their biography it's hinted at that he's kinda bullied into not singing but I can't really picture that.

That said, I'll take Thurston songs over Kim songs any day.

Oops. I thought it said "Pick the non-Korean surname" and I chose Thurston.
Why do you make it so scary to post here.

Then you obviously never met the Thurston family from Pyongyang. Nice people, very tall.

i, too, have always had a hard time imagining sonic youth as stifling lee's vocal efforts, but i guess it's possible. kim is least best, though "shadow of a doubt," "beauty lies in the eye" or whatever, and some of the stuff on _dirty_ are pretty fab performances.

my vote goes to thurston. who the fuck else could deliver a line like "i can't get laid cuz everyone is dead" with such i-don't-know-what?

Lee is the only one of them that can actually sing.

I gotta tell you, there are very few songs that Kim sings on that I can enjoy completely. I've grown used to Thurston's voice. Didn't realize Lee actually sang songs. Songs/Albums?

Lee, then Thurston, then Kim. I'd be perfectly fine with Kim Gordon never singing another SY song again.

I voted for Thurston. Lee's voice is technically better, but it has never quite done it for me. I've liked Kim's voice on a couple of older songs ("The Sprawl" being the one that has immediately come to mind), but her approach most of the time just seems too mannered for my tastes.

i got lee, thurtson, kim. but, this is really just an extension of the "flavor flav syndrome" - where you like him the best because you only get a few quick tastes each record.

Lee sings on:

In the kingdon #19
Pipeline/kill time
Erics Trip
Hey Joni
Mote
Wish Fulfillment
Saucer-like
Skip Tracer
Hoarfrost
Karen Koltrane
Karen Revisited

And probably some more I forgot about.

Lee also sings "Paper Cup Exit" on Sonic Nurse. Actaually on this album (which i like a lot), i think thurston does the least-good vocalizing. Kim doesnt do as much of that spoken word beat poetry stuff, and her vocals are less irritating.

Somehow I never realized this, and thought Thurston had just turned on his singing voice for once. Maybe I have to change my vote now, because I love this song.

I voted Lee b/c Wish Fulfillment is my favourite SY moment. Skip Tracer is ridiculously great as well. So happ when they played it...and the delivery on "Where are you now? When you're broken eyes are closed/Head in a cloudy dream, green as sailboats..." is so glorious and calming to me.

Thurst is Tuff, Kim is Give or take, depending on the tune. I hate the word "booger" in songs. Last!

Fav Lee moment is probably "Hoarfrost". Lovely song. For a long time, I didn't even realize it was Lee singing some of those songs. D'oh!

Thurston, he has his moments. Kim's hour came with "Orange Rolls, Angel's Spit"-I enjoy certain aspects of her snarled PMS, but she is still last.

Lee and not because he's the one that can "actually sing" or anything like that...i normally prefer bad singers...but there's just something about Lee's voice that's so...dreeeeeeeeeamy...also he's the better lyricist (or maybe it's just that he could sing anything and it'd sound good coming from his mouth...) though my favorite song ever ("'Cross the Breeze") is Kim-sung...and anyway, i enjoy listening to 'em all singin'...

i just picture Lee singing this one (Eric's Trip) and i kinda want to punch him in the face, both for his annoying voice, and also for actually going into a studio to record a great album and then singing some really, really stupid lyrics. i mean, half of these lyrics are actually really cool. and the other half are garbage, like, even if they came from a highschool kid i'd think they were retarded...

Eric's Trip
------------
hatred
I hate the past

I can't see anything at all, all I see is me
that's clear enough
and that's whats important, to see me

my eyes can focus
my brain is talking
looks pretty good to me
my head's on straight, my girlfriend's beautiful
looks pretty good to me

sometimes I speak
tonight there's nothing to say
sometimes we freak
and laugh all day

hold these pages up to the light
see the jacknife inside of the dream
a railroad runs through the record stores at night
coming in for the deep freeze

Mary: a simple word, are you there in the country?
Yr eyes so full, yr head so tight
can't you hear me?
Remember our talk
that day on the phone?
I was the door, and you were the station
with shattered glass and miles between us
we still flew away in the conversation

my cup is full, and I feel okay
the world is dull, but not today

she think's she's a goddess
she says she talks to the spirits
I wonder if she can talk to herself?
If she can bear to hear it?

this is Eric's trip
we've all come to watch him slip
he's slipping all the way to Texas
can you dig it?

(Eric says "The sky is blue...")
I see with a glass eye
the pavement view
a shadow forming, across the fields rushing
thru me to you

we tore down the world, and put up four walls
I breathe in the myth
I'm over the city, fucking the future
I'm high and inside yr kiss

we can't see clear
but what we see is a alright
we make up what we can't hear
and then we sing all night

scattered pages and shattered lights
a jacknife and a dream
there's something moving over there on the right
like nothing I've never seen
