I don't own any of their albums, but I saw them live in 96 or so. One of the worst shows I've ever seen. Completely uninspired crap...

GBV---->not crap (overall)

but pollard's been a little weak lately and now with the greatest hits and the box set out, does this mean they're just going to rest on their laurels?

Come one, people - total CRAP! What is so goddamn entertaining about watching some beer-belly middle-agers drink kegs on stage while they play their mediocre little rock songs with increasing levels of ineptitude? These guys need Quality Control badly.

And who told Nate Farley he could play in a rock band anyway? I want the Shutdown demos released immediately!

oh, i've got to get in on this one.

2 years ago, these guys came to orlando, and i was told that if i went to this show, i would see one of the greatest indie rock bands ever. $16 was the cover for the show, which was GBV and another band called "elf power". when gbv started, i was horrified. picture someone anticipating a good indie rock band and in its place getting a oily, beer-bellied version of david hasselhoff stumbling around in a sailor jacket(yes, he was drunk before he even hit the stage), swinging his microphone around (while hitting someone in the head on the front row), and between every song saying "where's me fuckin set list...oh fuck i don't know which fuckin song is next. fuck it all" and drooling on some stupid piece of paper he kept pulling out of his pocket while a bunch of college frat guys cheered, drank more and more beer, and thought of what girl they'd rape tonight.

i hate guided by voices.

trying to be the Who

trying to be the Who

trying to be the Who

trying to be the Who

trying to be the Who

trying to be the Who

trying to be the Who

trying to be the Who

not the Who.

take six different Who tapes, bury them underground in a bowl of water for twenty years, and trim out 45 second to 3 minute slices at random.

mix, bake in the oven for an hour. Hey, its another new GBV rarities collection!

tho, when weighed as a whole, GBV have much better lyrics, and tremendously better song titles.

GBV's final show is December 31 at Metro in Chicago.

I see that tickets are going for $300-$500.

That's three hundred dollars to five hundred dollars.

Wtf?

FWIW, from another message forum, a friend from DC had this to say, in a poll about GBV:

------------------------------------

any of you who went to guided by voices the other night knows that they played for three hours. THREE FUCKING HOURS. christ!
my own feeling is that I don't care who you are, how awesome you are, how legendary you are, or if you're my all-time favorite band... after an hour-90 minutes, I've had enough! especially if you're standing.

hows ya feel about that? are we down with standing up for three friggin' hours? is ANY band that good?

oh, and GBV were great. just not three hours worth of great.

Not Crap.

I didn't like the drummer they had the last time I saw them.
The guy from the Breeders was much better(he was in the
Breeders, right?). And the bass player sucking down Jack
even though he was already green in the gills was turning
my stomach. But, when I saw them with Greg Demos and
Tobin Sprout, touring behind Bee Thousand, it was dowright
magical.

So I was just very recently was introduced to GBV. One of those bands that everyone constantly talked about, which for some unexplainable reason made me not want to check it out. Well finally I did, and although it did not change my life, I discovered some great songs.

I went to my first (and last) GBV show last night. It was the Bloomington stop on their final tour... I was blown the fuck away. I dont care if they released a "greatest hits" or if the motherfucker looked like Bill Clinton's drunk doppleganger... THEY WERE INCREDIBLE! These assholes are over the hill and rocked harder than any fucking band Ive seen in the past 2 years. For three hours! Wasted! Best damn show I've seen in a really, really long time.

Yeah! What's up with all these young guys? I haven't seen a decent rockin' younger band in a long, long time. GBV, Dead Moon, Mission of Burma--these guys are as old, or older than my Dad, and yet they all kick ass and could probably drink the Strokes under two tables.

Alien lanes. I only own maybe 30 cds and this is one of them. Not Crap.
And definitely not trying to sound like the who. The Who were a Ball less scrodum of a band.
