Cloying, revivalist, and insubstantial.

Abject CRAP.

They're so genetically obvious that it's almost good.

They're so generically obivious and that's pretty bad.

a total null point.

I vote a full-on waffle breakfast, with hash browns, toast and bacon.

I finally heard a whole Interpol album last week. These things struck me:

Those parts not lifted whole from Television and Echo and the Bunnymen sounded spookily like Slovenly or My Dad is Dead. I have never encountered a band who were directly "influenced" by either, so I will assume they are unintentionally similar.

Still spooky.

The most entertaining aspect of a live Interpol performance is their bassist's striking similarity to actor Crispin Glover as George McFly in Back to the Future.

To be honest, the Ian Curtis voicing thing really really really bothers me. It's not like he took some of Ian's inflection and made his own style...he LITERALLY sounds JUST LIKE Ian Curtis. It's sad.

one reporter's opinion.
But I digress. Please continue with the squirrel circuit semantic debate.

Well, he's technically a better singer than IC. Then again, Stevie Ray Vaughn is technically a better guitar player than Elmore James...

i saw interpol once at the bowery ballroom back in the day, before all the hooplah surrounding their album. they were alright, the bassist (crispin glover, to some) dropped his bass and it fell off the stage into my hands, and the guy actually fought his way through the crowd after the show to come back up front and thank me personally.

i think i made a density/destiny joke.

Speaking of TV and Slovenly, I once saw Slovenly's great Tom Watson do a blazing "Venus de Milo" while playing with Mike Watt. The dude is mind-blowingly mind-blowing. Overpass, Tom's post-Slovenly band stuff with Mayo Thompson, is pretty interesting too. I think I'll go slap it on right now, come to think of it.

I don't really hear any Slovenly vibe/riffage/homage in Interpol, though.

Oh, and Not Crap. Heavy Waffle Factor, though. Like 7 or so.

Since I like the kind of Post-Punk Revivalist music they play, and since two of the band are English, I just had to vote for "not".

'Antics' is not half bad. Not at all. 'Slow Hands' is a good song. I remember Tim Cook saying that their first LP was about as good as the fifth (?) Psychedelic Furs record. I guess this would be Interpol's Talk Talk Talk?

I've heard snippets of 3 songs and they weren't very good. People tell me all the time that they're a great band. No decision as of yet.

Okay, I downloaded their albums and suffered through both. Extremely bland CRAP.

Total crap. I don't think they sound as much as Joy Division as people say... I think they sound more like The Chameleons. Too bad the only thing I can listen to by The Chameleons is the Peel Sessions CD.

I never made the My Dad Is Dead connection... but damn now that it's been brought up...

I always stop to admire the nice sleeve on Chopping Down The Family Tree when passing through my LPs. Maybe I should listen to it again.
I played a drum in Tijuana Hercules.

its funny, i worked for matador records briefly and as such had much an interpol catering to suffer through. Not bad guys, not good guys, but jesus, the sounds they make... I believe in one thread someone mentioned that a major component to good art is making the observer believe they are not being decieved. Interpol is just an abbreviation for pulling the wool over your eyes. I let the sound speak for itself.

ceeeeeeeeeeeerap.
