Joy Division. By a wide margin.

I like the Birthday Party fine. I can see why people really, really like them.

They have a certain bluesy-vibe to some of their songs that I find a bit. . . cheesy.

"Nick The Stripper" is a good example of that.

There isn't a single moment in the Joy Division catalog that I find cheesy.

I also prefer New Order to anything Nick Cave has done.

Okay, I've made a decision.

I'm listening to Scratch Acid. I can definitely hear the Birthday Party influence all over.

So my vote goes to the Birthday Party.

Nick The Stripper was a great song...not cheesy at all
also the New Order were not comparable to the Birthday Party...neither to the first Nick Cave records...
ok as you i voted for Joy Division...but i love the Birthday Party..and there is nothing of cheesy in them

Birthday Party of course. One of the easiest decisions I've had to make in a long time.

joy division winning makes me sad. wtf?

i can't sit through one of their albums, and birthday party could take 'em all with "junkyard" or "mutiny" but "live 81-82" really shows what chumps jd are. stack it up against "still" and go to hell.

i would like to have seen both bands, and if i had, i'd always be at the birthday party shows, the jd shows would've depended on who else was playing.

I must come clean, a lot of the trash talking I've been doing about Joy Division was pure trolling. I'm not that huge a Joy Division fan at all but I still respect and like one of their records, but really guys? Joy Division over the Birthday Party?

that's just fucked.

But, even though Joy Divison ain't bad, they're not as good as the Birthday Party, and secretly, I think every Joy Division fan knows this.

This is apples and oranges for me. The Birthday Party survived longer, so we got to see the complete evolution of that band. I might still give them the upper hand. Of course Joy Division spawned New Order which is a waffle factor... Close margin though, I think.

To me, there MIGHT be five bands in history better than the Birthday Party. Joy Division are not one of them.

I just tied the poll 35 to 35 with a vote for Birthday Party.

Joy Division is certainly awexome, however.

Joy Division

Had you lived within a hundred miles of Manchester at that time, you would vote Joy Division.

It was not just a band, it was a happening. I appreciate that other bands sound better and have probably written better songs by now, but however ordinary Joy Division sound some thirty years later, it was not just about the music but a change that was not punk and not quite new wave. Something different.
