There's some baritone on the later stuff, but it's another dude, or was over-dubbed, and used for colour; none of the melodic lines sound like they were played on a baritone. I think they had a guy playing a Bass VI for some of the live Hex shows.

The later Carlson lines are definitely played on a reasonably tuned, regular scale length guitar, AFAICT. Stuff like Miami Morning Coming Down from Bees, or Coda Maestoso... were almost certainly recorded in standard tuning. You wouldn't write either of those songs on a guitar that wasn't EADGBE.

i prefer the later tracks on the reissue. and II to the first album. but it's great when OOP is made available again.

a few waffles for the vocal bits.

haven't given much past Hex a proper listen... need to get on that!

I am giddy with anticipation for the new Earth album dropping in February. It appears they're releasing a double album in two parts over the course of 2011. Guitar, bass, drums, and CELLO.

The new lineup played here in Portland a while back and it was incredible. The old songs sound killer with the new lineup. They played two new songs which sounded killer.

NC. :WF: for some of the mid period live recordings and though they're ok I don't really dig on extra capsular or earth 2 much these days. But for Phase 3, Pentastar and everything from Hex on they forever have a pass to do whatever they want. That material is outstanding and I love it.

Yes, with Lori Goldston, I can't wait. The art kicks ass too...

Hot damn, that looks nice. So what's the word on the second part of the album? Have they set a release date for that?

Found a leak last week, it's AWESOME. I like this way more than the last 2 records.

Way more, huh? I love the last few, especially Hex. This new one fits right in there. The final 20 minute track is particularly nice.

The firsrt track is named "Old Black."

I really hope it's named after Neil Young's guitar--what an awesome tribute that would be!

I seriously can't wait for this record to drop. Heard one track on Youtube (Father Midnight?) and must've listened to it four times in a row. Bummed it was taken down the next day. That Cello really is a nice touch.

This one's gonna see much rotation.

really not into what they've been doing lately, I prefer the stuff they did in the 90's.

I'm pretty sure dude is playing Freebird around 3-5 min into "Ripped On Fascist Ideas." I should hate that but in this context its awesome.

I like both the 90's stuff and the newer material, though they do sound very different. I could easily see how someone would like one but not the other. I just happen to love both, and might even favor the latter period Earth. Nothing pisses the neighbors off like Earth 2, though. :D
