I really like For Emma....

It's mellow and catchy, and he has a great voice. I like the simplicity of it. There are no lame poser kids in my house when me and my lady put this record on and chill out. I think it's pretty great.

It was funny to listen to all the lame poser kids in Madison repeat the PR verbatim everytime they talked about this guy. It reminded me of how Sub Pop liked to portray Nirvana as backwoods hicks (much to the band's chagrin).

Boring. I feel like there are a lot of people who do the same thing as well or better. I liked "Skinny Love" for a bit, but then I read the lyric sheet:
Come on skinny love what happened here
Suckle on the hope in lite brassiere
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Sullen load is full; so slow on the split

Are you fucking kidding me?
Is you crazy baby, I gots to grind

Made an album called For Emma, Forever Ago.

Presumably without anyone holding a loaded gun to his head.

[x] is just ripping off Michael McDonald's vocal style over lite folk.

Just heard this for the first time.

"Skinny Love." This is close to the worst two-word phrase you could possibly sing in a soulful falsetto wearing a plaid shirt and toque. Jack Johnson-ized Lou Barlow whateverthehell, fuck off. There's a reason "Skinny Love" has millions of YouTube views: it absolutely sucks.

I really like it. I heard them for the first time when they played at the Breeders ATP. I have very bittersweet memories of that festival and something about their music goes well with bittersweet.

Just listened to a few of his songs out of morbid curiosity and they immediately made me want to login here purely in order to write something needlessly angry and American sounding like fuck this guy in the dick hole.

How authentically, sensitively heartfelt do these strummers feel when they're getting sucked off by the third different girl that month? This is the question which without fail crosses my mind.

I really, really hate this guy. Not severely dislike. Hate.

Fuck him and his retarded, ridiculously vague 10th-grader-who-just-read-one-Shakespeare-sonnet lyrics, "sensitive," "ethereal" (affected, vacuous) falsetto, and hookless, boringass acoustic-strum songs about how lonely he is and about how his girlfriend left him.

Great, he's lonely. So am I. So are you. So is Leonard Cohen. You don't see me writing "Only love is all maroon/Lapping lakes like leery loons" because of it (and you can bet your ass Leonard Cohen sure the fuck wouldn't).

People fall for bad poetry too often.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

In the someday, what's that sound.

rumor has it he sang gibberrish vocals for the first take and filled in the words later. (Which I was hoping I invented) so that may explain why they are meaningless to so many folks.

Personally, I don't really hear lyrics as much as timbre and melody, so this record is really emotive to me. Also he has been a pretty good friend through it all.

Snoooooore.

Someone on this forum said something like "Since when has anyone playing a acoustic guitar become folk music?". It might of been in the Iron and Wine poll actually. Iron and Wine, Mumford & Sons, Surjan Stevens. Booooooooring. Part Nick Drake, part Elliot Smith, a poor imitation of Will Oldham, part boring. Zzzzzzzzz.

Why listen to this when you could be listening to something else?

Crap.
