Crap. Too much raping for my taste.

Musically, these guys are OK, better than most rap out there that I've heard, and I've not heard a lot, I admit; I'm not a big fan. I like how unrefined the music is. Also, they're an entertaining bunch of kids in interviews.

Read that as "too much rapping."

The Mellowhype and Domo Genesis albums are worth listening to for this reason.

I really like the Odd Future stuff I've heard. The Earl album is fucking sick. The best rap album I've heard in a long time. I just got Tylers new one yesterday and I'm liking it. Maybe not as much as Bastard but it's still good.

As a side note, in a field dominated by men it is nice to see that the bulk of the Odd Future stuff is engineered and mixed by Syd Tha Kid, an 18 year old female. She did all of Goblin and a bunch off the other stuff.

Syd is really fucking good at what she does too. Any recent OF release has a ton of weird synths doing weird things but all completely audible, and the bass kick is absurd.

I think Goblin is better than Bastard, but it's also a much less pleasurable listen. It's the darkest thing I've heard in a minute. Numbers might be the best, though, if "64" and "igotagun" are any indication.

Earl Sweatshirt is the most crushingly skillful rapper to hit the scene in years. In terms of accomplishment relative to age the only comparable names are Nas and Prodigy, and he was younger than either when he dropped his eponymous song. His command of assonance is nothing less than freakish.

EARL is still good though.

In regards to their music, I feel exactly the same way. I've spent a ridiculous amount of time pondering both the group and how they make me feel and I still haven't reached any conclusions. Then I ponder why I've spent so much time pondering them and so on.

Watching their journey from mid last year to early this year was much very exciting for me. This peaked with the Fallon performance and it's been really disappointing since. I went from snapping up tickets to their performances at the Opera House and selling them for six times what I paid for them in the space of a month.

I think I got a vicarious thrill initially. Watching them do things I daydreamed about doing at their age.

Also, something about the music has become apparent that I initially couldn't hear through all the hype. It all sounds like it was made with fruity loops.

Despite all of this, I continue to watch with interest. And Earl.

This might seem like a minor point, but anybody who attempts to judge rappers by punk's moral code is gonna find themselves extremely frustrated, extremely fast. They're not even operating in the same dimension.

If you're not obsessively following these guys, Tyler, The Creator broke his foot in multiple places about 30 seconds into a set, immediately stage-dived, disappeared briefly for bandaging, and proceeded to perform a whole show alternately hopping and thrashing frantically on one foot or sitting in the middle of the stage.

Swag.

Wow. Yeah, huh?

Sounds bad to me. Like bad music.

Maybe so dumb and lowest-common-denominator that it comes out the other side and sounds innovative to some people. It is the 2nd thing I've heard in recent months that may be having this effect (tUnE-yArDs being the other).

I think the rapping is bad--technically bad. Poorly done and uninteresting sonically. The lyrics are dumb. I don't care about the bad words and stuff about killing and women and gay people and killing both women and gay people.

The beats are dumb.

The music is just nothing. Mindless noodling. It doesn't sound aggressive to me in the slightest.

Yonkers, bad. The Jimmy Fallon thing, bad. I listened to that Mellowgroove thing. Bad.

The dudes seem a little unhinged, but so what. They're about as unhinged as Slipknot or Gwar or Salem or something. No patch on a lot of other stuff.

Utterly unmoved. Let me know if you're still paying attention in ten years. Maybe I'm missing something.

Crap.
