Productiondome: Shellac Releases

Postby brando562 on Tue Mar 26, 2013 2:13 am

The question that I have for you all isn't "Which Shellac album you like best?" but instead "Which Shellac album do you think sounds the best?" Sure, they all have percolated guitar tones with fuzzy velvet bass lines and roomy drums but... which recordings serve your ears the best?

You fine people get two choices by the way, since I'm actually torn on a definite answer.

Sorry if this is Kerble'd, I did my searching through Google and only found a thread for the band itself.

Yeah, if I ever get to record drums in a big fancy studio I'm taking in Terraform as a reference. Maybe it's the only thing I'll take in. The snare sound is like copping a chisel between the eyes.

All of them sound great, obviously, but the EPs can't be touched. EPs win.

Yeah, Terraform's got something about it that works really, really well with the performances. The last one sounded way too clinical for me to enjoy half the songs.

I really don't know what I'm talking about, though.

Also, there's no "Live" in the Action Park title, is there?

Indie Rock Confession: I haven't listened to Shellac in ages, however I seem to remember thinking the last album was about the best they'd got in terms of both songs and production.

EIG sounds incredible. Especially in big headphones. Such beautiful detail.
Really, all the records have that, obviously, I just found this one to have something the others don't; the sound seems cleaner or something, but not cold. Fuck I hate these terms. How do you describe this shit without feeling like you should be kicked off over to the Hoffman freakshow?

Actually, the recording of the AC/DC cover is one of my faves. The drums are so dry, and I love it. It's like they're right up nose. Beautiful.

I go for Terraform, but also 100 Hurts.
Everytime I listen to "Watch Song" I go fucking crazy. Every element is simply perfect in this song.

Every Terraform I've owned on vinyl, 3 of them altogether over the years, all skipped at the same moment on Watch song, in the beginning, anyone else have this issue?

They're pretty fuckin' consistent, but I'll go with 1000 Hurts simply for the delay in 'Song Against Itself'.

Not sure if it's on that song, but my version of Terraform has always skipped. I'll have to give it a listen to identify the tune.

YES! I don't know if that's my favorite Shellac song, but it does trigger something that the others do not. Weird. Anyway, SALUT to You, fellow Watch Song nut ball!
