Terraform.

I find them all pretty consistent though. Does anyone else think the bass drum has gotten a little boxier sounding with each release after?

In terms of pure timbral aesthetic, this. However Terraform is my favorite Shellac album.

The guitar and drums on parts of 1000 Hurts are unreal. I mean Canaveral? Are you fucking kidding me?

At Action Park sounds so brilliantly like 'a band live in a room'.

Yeah, I like that though. I bet FMsteve/the band has gotten so used to the monitoring at EA that they got more aggressive with it over time.

Not sure if it's on that song, but my version of Terraform has always skipped. I'll have to give it a listen to identify the tune.

Watch Song is from 1000 Hurts and not Terraform.

I'm also affected weirdly by this song. I think its placement at the end of the record helps with that.

It's a tough question, but EIG is the only correct answer.

Dude coming out of the silence with 'What have we got here?' will make you shit your pants if you're not expecting it.

Mine doesn't have that issue with "Watch Song", but on multiple turntables there was a skip on "Shoe Song" that made the beginning repeat over and over between the bass comes in. I probably listened to it for 10 minutes once before I realized what was happening!

Action Park, without a doubt. Much as I love terraform (picture, mouthpiece, house full of garbage, canada, rush job) and 1000 hurts (the usual), AAP is the most consistent and features the highest amount of classic Shellac songs, in my humble opinion. Excellent Italian Greyhound is the one I return to the least, but it is still excellent in places (kitty pants). 2004 peel session also features the definitive performances of several 'Greyhound...' tracks - the performances of 'the end of radio' and 'steady as she goes' presented here blow the versions on EIGH out of the water.
Here comes another load of joy

Yep, first two EPs, though they all sound great. Terraform is my least-favourite sounding one. I remember Steve saying something somewhere to the effect that the record was hurt by being overcooked, but maybe I'm not remembering right.

Terraform out of the choices given.

But that performance and those songs were fucking perfectly executed and captured at Maida Vale.

I remember thinking this at the time. Let's see... yup: Peel Sessions thread from 2004.

Andrew L. wrote:Why do they sound so good? Who’s the current engineer? How many have there been? Why is the Peel Session version of ‘Crow’ about 1 trillion times better than the album version? What’s Maida Vale got that Electrical Audio doesn’t? Other than John Peel.

And then johnnyshape replies in detail, b/c this is the Premier Rock Forum.

it's really close for me. 1000 Hurts barely edges out Terraform. they both are truly amazing recordings in their own ways. sick drum sounds.
