They should make it like the N word. 'Hey man you can't use that polyrhythm'.

It would be fucked up if bloggers for the Atlantic and Gawker got to decide exactly what racism meant. Or if most people on this board did.

Diluting it with smaller -isms for already existing concepts seems even worse. I'm white, listen to my cultural critique.

You think? I don't know man, there are Halloween costumes and sports team mascots that need policing. Let's keep our eye on the prize.

Not to sound too pretentious but there is a metapolitical struggle going on for control of the discourse.

Anything you say, Judith Butler.

She's on the opposite side.

White people can't play on the off-beat anyway. That's what the black musicians always used to say. That's why they had to invent Motown, remember? Because white people can only deal with 1-2-3-4.

Here's a fucked thing: For over twenty years people have been telling me I play bass like a black guy. I get that fairly regularly. It's meant as a compliment, but what the hell?

Because white people are all like this and black people are all like that.

Did Amelia show up to make a snide personal remark about me? Being that that's virtually all she ever contributes, I think that's probably what it is!

I've never had someone on permanent ignore but I think in this case it's gonna work out great.

I haven't been paying attention, but based on the last few pages:

  • The Arcade Fire have changed direction radically.
  • They are this century's Skrewdriver, but much posher and Canadian.
  • Their new set consists of the entire band in black face, surrounding a bubbling pot in to which they pour the blood of freshly beheaded chickens.
  • But they are not insensitive: no bones through the nose.
  • This act is a tribute to their Haitian roots.
  • Audience are required to wear white tie / ball gowns.
Oh, and
  • The new album sounds a little bit like the Rapture.

This artistic turn is deemed 'controversial' by the internet.

Well, what you described is something I would actually try and see some time out of curiosity, so I don't think you're talking about the same band.

amelia wrote:Seriously, that is some first world bullshit. Real racism has nothing to do with the appropriation of cultural factors. If anything, they are exposing people that are ignorant of anything not white bread.

Give me a break, I've been around racism, this shit music isn't it. White people be cray cray.

Edit: Go ahead and call me racist, my patients would beg to differ.

Well amelia, I'll tell you who you can be racist towards in the U.S.A. any Gentile group of high organizational capacity: that is white people and Far-East Asians.

Sigh, now you've quoted it I can see it.

Obviously I meant that I am just the latest in a long list of people Amelia comes here to make snide remarks about. I've never seen anybody so keen to make enemies of people she barely knows. I guess there's a reason for it and the reason is probably sad, but there it is.

To everyone really upset about us asking people to dress up at our shows… please relax. It's super not mandatory. It just makes for a more fun carnival when we are all in it together. So far these have been the best shows we have ever played.
See you soon.

I like their new record, so I was happy to be asked to go.

HOWEVER

I just found out that Television are one of the openers.

I am excite.
