Left was obliterated by Cold War in this country. Just now getting going again. Of course there are gonna be weirdos with their weird subcultures left over from decades of stagnation. We're pushing them out now. Join in.

Last picture making me LOL for like two hours. It's as if someone just said:

Sam Gindin wrote:Though identities obviously matter very much, they cannot combine into a new politics because their essence is their separateness. Something else is needed to bring them together in a broader, more integrated, and more coherent politics, something beyond the particularistic concerns of both identities and unions. That 'something' is class...The challenge of class politics is how to bring differences together in ways that generate full respect and equality within the class - from pay equity and fighting workplace discrimination, to reproductive rights and socializing family burdens like childcare, to establishing equal status for immigrants - so as to address the larger questions of full equality within society. It is in that sense that class trumps, without underplaying, issues of identity.

Some people on the left are ugly, weird and stupid, so it's an stupid ideology and we should pay no attention to it. That doesn't happen in any other ideology, oh no. It's not like they are human or anything.

WTF is with this most recent bullshit John Halle piece? Fucking awful. I love the shit I've read there over the past few months, especially stuff on teaching and radicalism, but this thing is garbage.

Which one? The one on jazz?

John H. is a bit of a curmudgeon who used to have a grudge against Jacobin actually. He's really smart but a bit crusty.

In any case, I think publications on the left that publish stuff we love and the odd piece we hate should be commended. It generally demonstrates some fluidity and openness as opposed to a hermetic ideological line. Not every damn piece or blog post published is representative of an editorial line or a political platform or whatever.

There's a fine line though. Counterpunch publishes so much libertarian bullshit and half-baked contrarian crap I stopped reading it a couple years ago.

Yeah, they'll probably have me forever given the work they've done on CPS, but what a groaner Halle's essay was, and how completely unnecessary (!).

With the caveat that there are "improvised music communities," sure, those conversations happen. Improv fails sometimes -- that's one of the things that makes it exciting (and makes it what it is, of course).

Read the piece. I guess my reaction was more one of "whatevs, guy" than genuine annoyance. The film reviews of Eileen Jones on the other hand...

No offense to those of you who know her, she might be an ace person who I'd have a great time talking to about this stuff, but, God, I really don't care for her taste in movies and I don't care for writing, which I think apes all of the worst aspects of Pauline Kael.

It's been really hit or miss for me recently. For example. the Richard Seymour reaction piece to CH was tendentious and about as subtly reasoned as a sledgehammer but the Jeet Heer piece on Harry Jaffa was excellent.

The Seymour thing was just republished from his blog. It's worth distinguishing that kind of rapid-fire online material from the stuff that goes through a more substantial editorial process (i.e., everything in the print issues). This said, the amount of quality material Jacobin puts up online every day is just nuts. They publish something good -- often essential -- pretty much every day. It's inspiring.

This post on J founding editor Seth Ackerman's personal blog TOO HOT FOR JACOBIN about racial disparities in the US prison population is extra-hawt.

Good interview with Bhaskar Sunkara.

One of our theses is that in the US the political spectrum is so narrow people who are often self-described liberals are people who in other political contexts would be social democrats or even further left. So what we try to do is engage with them in a positive way and try to introduce them to a structural critique of capitalism and generally try to bolster that separation between the social base that is voting for centre-left or centrist parties but who are often themselves further left in their aspirations. So our engagement isn’t that geared towards the Right.
