This Heat records make me feel like I'm doing homework. I like SOME of their ideas a lot... but there's often something in the execution that doesn't work for me.

Can however... unfuckwithable.

Can.

This Heat should only be Thunderdomed with other bands who, like them, punted out after only a couple of releases.

This Heat feels embedded in my consciousness somehow and I can't imagine not knowing that music, although hearing it at the right time is a big part of it. Other than Ege Bamyasi, Future Days and the occasional other song with Can I'm only listening to hear the bass and drums. This Heat at their best sound entirely ambivalent about the rock element and may abandon or reconfigure it beyond recognition at any moment, while Can at their worst sound enthralled by and fully invested in its leathered myth.

So This Heat I think is the deeper and wider exposition.

Can is about on par with the Grateful Dead to me. And I kinda like the Dead.

This Heat is more like a band brought by a UFO for the purpose of showing us what humans might be capable of.

first i wrote, "this post made me happy", because i just got done writing a non-edited stream of consciousness letter to someone and was in that mode of writing/thnking. then i remembered that this is not that, so i was going to change it to, "feel good post of the century". then i realized that without the above context, that might not make sense. but, uh, anyway.

This Heat are great, and since their output is so much less than Can's in volume the ratio of essential:non-essential is naturally much higher, but I am still going with Can. The fact that they made six or seven completely crucial LPs and made a huge mark on music that reached far beyond Europe kind of puts it over the top.

I do think the two aren't really all that thunderdome-ish together, though. Can vs. Guru Guru, Amon Düül or Neu! would have made more sense to me. I have always seen This Heat as having more of a Recommended Records/RIO type aesthetic than a Kraut/Ohr style.

Horizontal Hold blew my fucking mind when I first heard it. I had that "there is no way this was made 30 years ago" feeling.

This Heat are one of my favorite bands ever. Such a tough listen at first and it never seems to get that much easier but they're so rewarding. Shit's essential.

CAN are also one of my favorites ever making this stupidly hard. Just because they came before and were an influence on This Heat I'd have to go for CAN.

This Heat.

Can't think of anyone who can top these guys. Maybe Beefheart & The Magic Band are on a par.

I think I have to vote This Heat, mainly based on H&E and Deceit. I love the Peel Session version of Horizontal Hold, but man, love the studio versions of Paper Hats and SPQR. That being said, I think I ought to give Can another spin. Maybe it's not true for everyone, but some of my favorite bands didn't click with me for the first few listens.

So, for now, This Heat.

That anyone would choose This Heat over Can is insane to me.

Can't help but think it has a lot to do with the way people discover This Heat and that they might feel a bit "special" because up until relatively recently/the internet they hadn't been canonized the way Can have.

I don't like second guessing people, but have fun dancing to those two joyous This Heat albums.

"Hello person that I love dearly. Shall we put on Deceit and shiver in tandem?"

Don't get me wrong, I love This Heat, but I would take Future Days over them. I would take Holger's isolated bass over them.

This Heat is like a whole concentrated blueprint for an alternate universe. It's just a lot. It's very easy for me to see why someone would choose either band.

If CAN stopped after Future Days, then this would be more difficult, but the fact of the matter is they made Rite Time.

I can't vote, though. This is like picking a favorite child.

This thread pre-dated The Lost Tapes* and a slew of live stuff that was uploaded to YT, would probably change my vote to Can now.

(there is probably similar stuff in the This Heat vault but unless it's released, we'll never know.)

The fact that it may remain in the vaults has a lot to do with why they're such a monolith.

Look, I'm being a complete fuckwit but I feel strangely passionate about this because there is no fucking way This Heat are better than Can. It's almost as if you're now suggesting they're better because they will never release their secret music that doesn't actually exist!
