Tiny lavalier microphone. Can take moderate levels and will fit anywhere you can imagine it. Slightly larger than a paper match.
Steve uses these commonly on the batter side of a kick drum by gaffers-taping the cable to the rim and letting it dangle. Also used for acoustic guitars by applying double-sided tape near the bridge and applying a mic.
