Studio B

Studio B

Studio B comprises two performing spaces, the Live room and the Dead room, and a small isolation booth suitable for one person or an amp, plus the Control Room.

The Performance Spaces of Studio B

Studio B’s live room is roughly 800-square feet with a 30-foot high canted diffusion ceiling to break up standing waves and flutter echoes. It has abundant reverberant decay, perfect for bigger, more ambient drum sounds and chamber acoustics for strings and vocal groups. The Live Room houses a Yamaha C7 7.5-foot grand piano and centralized storage for microphones for the whole studio.

Studio B’s dead room is a 300-square foot isolation space- large enough to accommodate an entire band- and has immaculately dry acoustics. There is a sliding glass wall between the Live and Dead rooms, so the entire space can be opened if isolation isn't critical. In a typical session the two rooms would be used to isolate amplifiers from drums or acoustic instruments, with unobstructed, clear sightlines between them.

The Control Room of Studio B

Studio B’s control room has one multitrack (Studer A820) and one mixdown machine (Ampex ATR-102), in addition to its 24-input/ 24-output Pro Tools Ultimate rig with Avid HD I/O converters. It sports a 36-input Neotek Series II that’s been modified for flexibility, but with the original audio circuits.

Studio B has most of the same interconnection flexibility as Studio A, except that it’s a bit more cumbersome to have a large outboard workstation or second multitrack added to the existing multitrack. There is a comprehensive set of outboard equipment with many of the quintessential studio classics racked next to some more oddball items to inspire exploration and creativity, but there are few less options than are available in Studio A.

Studios A and B share access to all of the microphones, musical instruments, amplifiers, and cabinets at Electrical Audio—except the pianos and the Hammond organ, which stay where they are unless you hire movers (it’s happened!).

Studio B’s live room has 30-foot ceilings for a massive room sound.

Studio B’s dead room is a very dry counterpart to the live room and is sizable enough to fit a full live band.

The Control Room of Studio B is centered around a modified Neotek Series II connected to a Studer A820 and Ampex ATR-102, or a Pro Tools rig for digital sessions.
