Adjustable ratio control changes the behavior of the gain cell from gate to expander to compressor to limiter to dynamic reversal (negative ratios where loud signals are rendered quiet and quiet signals loud). Can be very subtle and gentle or extremely brash and aggressive, and has some modes that no other device can duplicate. The controls can be confusing, but we have a user guide for reference if you get in the weeds with it.
